Newbridge 19     Athy 20

A Leinster League match which was completely turned on its head in the 4th minute of injury time saw Athy come from behind to out-score a Newbridge side that were ahead from the kick-off. Athy were 19 points to 10 behind with79 minutes on the clock but came out winners. Newbridge scored four penalties and a converted try to Athy’s two penalties and two converted tries.

Newbridge started this game with a lot of pressure on Athy. Newbridge outhalf Donal Cashman kicked a penalty in the 8th minute from 30 yards out. He followed this with another penalty in the 14th minute from 34 yards out in front of the posts and he was on hand again in the 24th minute from 39 yards out. Athy were yellow carded for a late tackle, but this did not deter them as they slotted a penalty from Tom Glynn in front of the posts in the 27th minute. In the best move of the game Newbridge backs managed to put left winger Stephen Cooke away as he rounded his man to score near the posts. Cashman converted. Right on half time Athy, following good forward work, got James Smith over for a try which Glynn converted to leave the score at 16 points to 10 at the break.

Nine minutes into the second half Cashman was on target again for Newbridge with his fourth penalty to leave the score at 19 points to 10. Athy kept plugging away at this stage. Their outhalf was very astute with his line kicks as they gained good ground for the visitors. On the other hand, when Newbridge exerted pressure on Athy in the loose forwards it was Athy who received a number of penalties from the ensuing ruck. Athy man Tom Glynn put over a penalty from in front of the posts in the 79th minute to reduce the arrears. In the final throw of the dice Athy won a lineout 5 metres out and in the 4th minute of injury time Tony Martin to go over for the try. Tom Glynn was on hand to convert as the final whistle blew.
