Leinster League Division 2

Newbridge 17     Coolmine 13

Coolmine were top of the league and had only lost once up to now. They had beaten Newbridge previously at their home venue. Newbridge who had success in their last 4 matches came out to perform in a game full of commitment and high tackling. Newbridge won by scoring two converted tries and a penalty to Coolmines’ 2 tries with one converted and a penalty.

There was a very strong wind blowing across the pitch which made reading and handling difficult. Newbridge were quick off the mark and in the 13th minute outhalf Robbie Waters kicked a penalty 18 metres out and in front of the posts. In the 21st minute there was a lot of loose play, but Newbridge got hold of the ball and a quick transfer through their full back Karl Darragh to the right winger Zach Meehan saw him score out wide. Robbie Waters kicked the conversion. Coolmine put on the pressure and a simple kick over the line saw the ball bounce in the wind for a Coolmine touchdown. Newbridge were not to be outdone and came straight back. Right on half time they made several trusts at the try line but some good handling from Robbie Waters saw centre Billy Delaney crash over for a try. Waters converted. The half time score was 17 points to 5.

On 50 minutes Coolmine kicked a mighty penalty from close to the halfway line. An injury to Willie Ryan on the left wing on 52 minutes saw him replaced by Gavin Houlihan. Following the water break Newbridge were now down a man after a yellow card for a high tackle. Coolmine pushed on and in the 77th minute they got over for a converted try after a lot of forward’s pressure. Newbridge were not going to release their advantage and they fought for every ball to the end of the match.

Best for Newbridge were prop Cameron English and second row Scott McMullan in the forwards while Billy Delaney tackled well as did winger Gavin Houlihan.
