Mick Galwey, Lions, Ireland, Munster, Shannon & Castleisland rugby legend put three Newbridge Youths teams, the U14s, U15s & U17s  through their paces in Rosetown on Tuesday evening 17th January. There was a big turnout of players, coaches & parents at the three sessions, each of which was of 45 + minutes duration.
Mick took charge of each session and had the boys working through a whole series of offensive & defensive drills. He then switched to rucking and counterrucking drills. Before each drill Mick explained the purpose of the drill and demonstrated the drill before he set the boys to work. He finished each session with a short match so that the players could use their new knowledge & skills. He intervened a few times in each match to highlight well executed plays. The intensity levels were higher than is normal at a training session. Nevertheless, the boys enjoyed the physicality of the sessions.
The reaction of players & coaches alike was very positive & the club is looking forward to a return training night with Mick. Thank you Mick.

Newbridge U15's 79 - St MARYs 5

Newbridge were just too strong in every department for Marys to make any impact in this lastest thriller from the under 15s. A dominant performance from the forwards with Thomas Flynn and Conor Hughes to the forefront provided the platform for a veritable tryfest with great displays from Michael O' Brien, Gavin Burke and Michael Buckley among others. Despite a comprehensive loss St Marys showed what a great club they are through their generous hospitality which included a guided tour of their impressive clubhouse.

Well done everybody.

Newbridge U15's 22 - DLSP 19

Congratulations to Newbridge on a gutsy display to win this game with a last minute try. Revenge is sweet. DLSP dominated much of the play with great rucking scrimmaging and running but monumental efforts from Ross Archbold, Conor Hughes, Peter Matthew Donnelly, Colin Barrett, Thomas Flynn and Thomas Berney kept us in it. DLSP led by 2 points at half time but Newbridge never gave up and triumphed with a last gasp try. Well done lads.

News

Collie sustained a broken and dislocated wrist and underwent surgery at 5.45pm in Tallaght. Surgery was a success to date. He was kept in overnight for observation. He would like to thank all those who (in his own words) minded him on the pitch, phoned, texted and comforted him. He’s very grateful. Up Newbridge.

Newbridge RFC U15 00   Naas 00

Even with a score line of 0 - 0 this game was a thrilling encounter between fierce rivals Newbridge and Naas. Newbridge rucking and kicking game was superb throughout the first half. Great displays by Peter Matthew Donnelly Ross Archbold and Thomas Flynn who made a crunching tackle just before the break to deny Naas what looked like a certain try. Both teams were up for this one. The game was played at a ferocious pace. Naas pressure was matched by Newbridge resilience and both teams went in at half time happy either one could win. The second half was just as fierce but was marred by injuries to Gavin Burke and Thomas Flynn.  Newbridge rucking was much slacker this half. Naas started to get on top. Gavin Burke saved the day this time with a well timed tackle to deny Naas for a second time. The last few minutes were messy but Newbridge held out for a deserving draw. Our best wishes go out to Gavin Burke and Thomas Flynn for speedy recoveries.

Congratulations to Newbridge on another fine display of rugby which saw them reel in 8 tries and 2 conversions in an electrifying first half. Newbridge scored at will as Clane had no answer to this onslaught and seemed to be totally disorganised.

Newbridge RFC 46   Carlow 19

Newbridge’s  first game under floodlights got off to the perfect start with a comprehensive win over Carlow.  Newbridge tactics were to set off at as fast a pace possible and run the ball wide. This paid dividends with three quick tries from Gavin Burke and one from Michael O Brien. Carlow never gave up. Their forwards were big and rucked hard. They were rewarded with a try. This brought the first half to a close.

Half time score   Newbridge RFC  24    Carlow 05

In the second half Newbridge and Carlow were pretty evenly balanced. Both teams rucking and running hard.  Newbridge drew first blood with a try from Michael O Brien. Early on David Randles got injured and substitute David Marnell gave a great display of rugby for his first time in the number 10 position. Carlow and Newbridge scored two more tries each   but Newbridge came out of this game deserving victors. A big thank you to John Hamilton for supplying pizzas and refreshments afterwards and Mark Delaney for the music.

Saturday 05 Oct 2011 Operation Transformation???

Jer Delaney organised a type of Operation Transformation competition which took place around the Curragh on Saturday 05 Oct 2011 and proved to be a huge success to Newbridge RFC U15’s and Newbridge RFC U17’s who took part. Plenty of running and logging and getting wet throughout the Curragh but great team displays shown by all.  Newbridge RFC U15’s backs were the eventual winners followed by Newbridge RFC U15’s forwards. The Army curry went down a treat afterwards.

8th October 2011

Newbridge RFC (U15) 29     Portarlington 13

Newbridge ran out convincing winners with a superb team display of rugby.
Portarlington were first to score (pen 13 mins) but a block down resulted in Matthew Dempsey going over after 19 mins. Newbridge dominated the rest of the first half.  They were on top in the line outs and scrums.  Conor Murphy, David Randles, Dylan Walker & John Hamilton doing tremendous work. Some great driving from Conor Hughes, Michael O Brien & Eoin Collins paid its rewards with a surging run from Thomas Flynn through 4 tackles to record Newbridge’s second try just before half time with the conversion by David Marnell.

Half time score   Newbridge RFC 12     Portarlington  03

Portarlington started the second half with a well constructed try after 3 mins. Newbridge responded with another try from Thomas Flynn 10 mins & conversion by Colin Barrett.
Newbridge continued their dominance in the line outs and scrums. This paid dividends with two more tries from Gavin Burke 22 mins & 30 mins. Gavin was also unlucky not to score on three different occasions. Great work again this half from Ross Archbold Adam Bingham Paul Lawlor Gary Maguire Eoin Collins & Ryan Huntley. Portarlington got a consolation try after 28 mins. This was a great team display and enjoyable match to watch.

2nd October 2011

Newbridge U15s had a great league win against Naas this weekend although they got off to a sluggish start and were behind after 5 mins with a try from Naas but good pressure put them all square after 10 mins with a super try from Gary Maguire converted by David Marnell. The rest of the first half belonged to Newbridge who added two more tries in the 14th and 17th  mins from Michael Buckley and Michael O Brien and super conversions again from David Marnell. Some great tackling from Eoin Collins Kye Lumbard Thomas Flynn and especially Gary Maguire paid its rewards. Now Newbridge were taking the game to Naas

Half time score Naas 05       Newbridge 21

Again Newbridge were sluggish for the first 15 mins of the second half and paid the price with two excellent tries from a Naas team on the up. Naas were applying all the pressure to get to within 4 points with 15 mins left. This game was now set up for an exciting finish. Newbridge got their act together and held Naas with superb tackling and defence work. Stephen Creighton put in some super tackles to deny Naas and Newbridge came out of this game with a famous victory. All in all a great entertaining game of rugby.
