Congratulations to Newbridge Under 13s who scored a strong win against Portarlington in Leinster's McGowan Cup by 55 pts to 14. They will now play Athy in the third round. Watch out for fixture details. Commiserations to the Newbridge Under 17LL side who lost a high scoring match to North Kildare. The final score in this Culliton Cup match was Newbridge 29 North Kildare 39. Both games were very competitive with great rugby being played by the Newbridge teams.
Whilst the Under 13s progress to next round the Under 17s go into a Plate competition. Both teams still have a lot of rugby to play this season as their Leinster League campaigns are still ongoing as well as more Cup / Plate matches to come. Well done to both teams players and coaches. A big thank you for all the supporters who came out to cheer the players on and, most especially, for the parents who provided food for the teams afterwards. !! Great Cub Team Work !!

Newbridge Under 18s 24pts - Portarlington Under 18s 3pts
Played under lights in Rosetown Newbridge Under 18s got their first win in the Leinster league on Friday evening, 20th October, at home to Portarlington RFC. Playing against the beginning of Storm Brian, and the torrential rain it brought, the Newbridge pack played a conservative game that saw them make good yardage through their hard carrying forwards Patrick Corrigan, Callum Reynolds and Michael Ugochuku.
Midway through the first half Ugochuku finally got the breakthrough Newbridge deserved. After some great work at the break down from Scott McMullen, Kyle O'Brien and Peter O'Neill. Ugochuku going over for the opening try after breaking through several would be tacklers. Ryan Jenkins rattled the left upright which denied him what would have been an impressive conversion. Portarlington answered back with some very patient play of their own and kept possession of the football for the remainder of the half. With several minutes left in the half Portarlington created room outside the Newbridge defensive line and, if not for the determination of centre Brendan O' Driscoll in chasing down the ball carrier, Newbridge were in real trouble. Portarlington were rewarded shortly afterwards for their sustained pressure with a kickable penalty that was subsequently converted to leave Newbridge leading 5pts to 3 at half time.
Now playing with the wind Newbridge's back line started to make use of the conditions and found room in behind Portarlington’s on rushing defence with good work from Jenkins and full back Griffin Kennedy. Throughout the half Portarlington were unable to find room to trouble Newbridge. The tenacious tackling of centre Jamie Smith and Captain Kevin Commane in particular made sure Portarlington's metres gained were metres earned. It didn't take long for the Newbridge’s pressure to pay off when Corrigan bullied his way through Port’s creaking defence. Jenkins made sure of the extra points from the boot this time to increase the lead to 12pts to 3. Newbridge continued to apply pressure onto the visitors and soon after Corrigan again found the line. With the conversion suiting a left footed kicker, Kennedey now stepped up to convert increasing the lead to 19pts to 3. Although never dirty the game saw three yellow card leading to Newbridge playing the best part of the last 20 minutes with 14 men. Portarlington wrestled possession off Newbridge for a period of the remaining 20 minutes but the Newbridge team turned defence into attack by forcing turnovers and counter rucking with the ferocity of a well seasoned pack. Newbridge were rewarded for this intensity. Second row and man of the match Jack Moore created room to force his way over the Portarlington line from 15 metres thus securing Newbridge's bonus point. Unfortunately the wind knock the ball off the kicking tee and, with the allotted time for a kicker running out, Kennedy was forced to try a drop kick which sailed wide of the right post.
Newbridge's dominance in the pack was the difference between the sides but Portarlington can be very proud of their performance under such harsh weather conditions. In a very entertaining match played under lights in Rosetown both sides played an intelligent game that negated the conditions. However in the end the home side found a way to win convincingly by 24pts to 3.
Congratulations to the JCT and SCT teams from Patrician Secondary School Newbridge. Both teams have moved into the Quarter Finals of their respective Leinster Cup competitions after defeating teams from Colaiste Lorcain, Castledermot on Monday 27th November in Rosetown. Hard luck to the Newbridge U17s in their Leinster League Division 2 Final played at Mullingar RFC on Sunday 26th March 201. Their opponents, Ashbourne, were excellent on the day and well worth their win.
The Newbridge team were well supported by a vocal crowd who had
travelled to Mullingar and a big thanks to everyone who made the trip.
The players have had a great league season this year, winning 7
consecutive games, including Division 2A, and were unfortunate to fall
at the final hurdle today. There is still plenty to play for this season as
the team is still in the Leinster Plate and a Midlands League Final. While
it didn't happen today this group of lads and their coaches have a lot
to be proud of and show great promise for Newbridge RFC's future.
Below, courtesy of Michelle Sharkey and "Game On Photos", is a
photograph of the Under 17 Squad from the league final including

leave to help the 1st XV win their playoff in Tullow. Well done Paddy.

On Saturday 16th September there was a solid performance from Newbridge Under 18s away to a strong North Kildare team The match was the opening encounter of the North Midlands Area Under 18 Premier Section A league. Newbridge, who the previous week had won the Area Under 18 Blitz, got off to a slow start conceding a number of early scores. The visitors then took the game to the opposition dominating possession and try count for remainder of match. Unfortunately this was not enough with North Kildare running out victors by 31 pts to 17. Never the less this was much for the Newbridge players to be proud of and the right potential is being display to hint of a good season to come. A number of Under 17 players had a run out and all gave a great display. Newbridge Under 18s are coached by former Newbridge 1st XV player Liam Heavey and current player Paddy Commane, Finally thank you to Michelle Sharkey of Game On Photos for the match pictures.
