August 18th: Bective trial matches
rained out this weekend - The squad match v Bective scheduled for
last Saturday was, unsurprisingly, cancelled due to the ridiculous
weather we had. Webmaster drove down to Carlow on Saturday morning and
it really was crazy stuff. A good decision to cancel, at best we could
have damaged the sodden pitches, at worst someone could have drowned out
on the wing or at the bottom of a ruck. 1XV and 2XV have a similar squad
session/ trial match v Barnhall next Saturday Aug 23rd 3pm.
August 14th: Rugby back in Rosetown from this weekend. Summer (if that's what you'd call it this year) has drawn to an end which can only mean 2 things. 1. The Late, Late show will be back shortly and 2. Rugby matches return to Rosetown.
This Saturday August 16th, 3pm gives us a
first look at the men's teams when the 1XV and 2XV combined squads play
a trial match against Bective in Rosetown. The match will be interesting
as much as to view some of the new charges in NRFC and to see how the
players start to cope with the new law changes that have come into
force. Don't forget clubhouse and bar will be open to show the South
Africa v New Zealand tri-nations match live at 2pm.
July 30th - What a result. Newbridge RFC Scoops Major Capital Grant worth €270,000. Newbridge Rugby Club is rapidly becoming one of the most talked about clubs in Irish Rugby circles. The Club is experiencing unprecedented success having won promotion to Leinster League Division 1 in 2008. This September Newbridge will compete with the elite of Leinster Junior Clubs. In addition to fielding 3 senior men’s teams, a highly competitive 20’s side and a full compliment of youths and minis teams, Newbridge have also developed a Ladies team who have been integral in the revitalisation of the Club.
The club have matched success on the field with a hard working ethos off the pitch. Having found themselves in the position of having more teams than the current facility can cope with Newbridge RFC has relied on the unsustainable generosity of the Defence Forces on the Curragh and Newbridge College. So, in 2006, the club started on the long road to a major redevelopment project. The first step in this was fundraising and the club successfully raised in excess of €200,000 through a Friends of Newbridge RFC programme.
The icing on the cake for 2008 arrived on the 29 July when Newbridge scooped €270,000 in the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism Sports Capital Grants. This represents the biggest award to any rugby club in the country with the Newbridge club also topping the grant awards in County Kildare.
Club Chairman Niall Browne was understandably delighted with the latest news. “We have a vision of what our club can achieve. We have put a serious effort into redevelopment and this grant award is justice for the blood, sweat, and tears of our volunteers who never cease to amaze me with their efforts. The Sports Capital Grant is a vital piece of the jigsaw in our development plans and we are over the moon. We are developing a momentum on and off the pitch that makes our club a very exciting place to be.”
Mr Browne singled out the efforts of the clubs development committee but also pointed out that without passion on the pitch there wouldn’t be much point in having it off the pitch. “Anyone involved in sports clubs will know the effort and passion involved. I am absolutely delighted for all our members and our community. We were previously unsuccessful with an application in 2006 but learned from that experience and kept at it. We are in a position now to further realise our ambitions. This whole process aims to give our young men and women facilities reflective of their commitment and performance.”
Club President, Peter Flanagan was celebrating the first major success in his tenure. “I would like to issue an invitation to anyone in our community. We are doing something special here and I would appeal to the people in Newbridge, Kilcullen and the Curragh to come out and have a look. We have a unique spirit in Newbridge RFC that is the most important cornerstone in any development. Bricks and Mortar can’t give you that, but it is vital we reward our membership with an effort off the pitch as well as on it.”
Info: The Department of Arts Sport and Tourism Sports Capital Awards were announced on the 29 July 2008. Newbridge RFC received a grant of €270,000 to develop 3 playing pitches and floodlights. The grant is the highest to any club in Kildare and any rugby club in the country. Details of all grants are available on: http://193.178.1.186/grants_funding/2008_sportgrants.html.
July 29th Wanted -
budding artists for major painting job: As you know, Sat 9th August
is Club clean up day, but we are also looking for painters before then.
This Sat 2nd Aug we need helpers to assist with the painting of the
changing rooms, toilets and that general area. Some of you may not be
asked to do a whole lot for our great little club throughout a season
but over the next 2 weekends is your chance to put in a little effort.
Colin O'Brien will be out in Rosetown this Saturday from 8am and any
help he can get would be greatly appreciated, the more people helping
the quicker we are out, hoping to be gone by lunch time. So if you can
spare some time - even an hour or 2 please try to. Answer to be revealed
shortly.... July 10th: Club cleanup day Saturday August 9th: Club and pitches cleanup day Saturday August 9th from 10am. Lots to do to get ready for the upcoming season. Please confirm your attendance to JD or any of the Exec ASAP. Remember, it's our club - let's not leave it to the same small faithful to do the clean up duties. NRFC Men's pre-season fixture. 1XV/ 2XV squad trial match v Bective in Rosetown Sat August 16th. More details re k.o time as they come to hand, but bar will also be open and South Africa v All Blacks live on the large screen from 2pm. Pitches, dressing rooms and clubhouse need to be prep'd beforehand, so even more important we get a good size crew out the weekend before for the cleanup. Congratulations Dan Jennings - congrats to our U20 prop Dan Jennings and last year's Newbridge College SCT captain, who has made the Leinster U19's training squad for this season. 2008/09 NRFC Membership Dues: Membership and International Ticket Application Form for the upcoming season now posted. Click Here for an application form. Note: Only paid up members are entitled to apply for tickets. Fill out and return to any of the people listed in the form ALONG with the correct monies due. This season all international ticket applications must also be accompanied by the money upfront. Why? Newbridge RFC (and all RFCs) have to pay the IRFU upfront for all tickets. As we're not a bank, we're just requesting you do the same. As per previous seasons, each home 6 Nations ticket is twinned with an Autumn home international match, so you have to buy the 2 ticket package. Once again, this is what's coming down from the IRFU, and Newbridge RFC is just passing the request onto our members. Full details of match packages, prices and membership dues in the application form. Remember - only paid up members are entitled to apply for tickets. July 8th: Hosie and Lalor Cup Fixtures announced. Newbridge 1XV and 2XV teams' competitive seasons get underway in Rosetown Sunday August 31 when they host Portarlington in the Hosie and Lalor Cups. This is followed by Naas (A) Sept 7 and Clane (H) Sept 14. First league game is in Rosetown v Boyne Sept 28. Click here to see the full list of the 1XV and 2XV upcoming fixtures. Ladies, 3XV and U20s will be added here as details are confirmed. An underage and mini's fixtures page will also be added this season.

July 1st: Winner alright.
Congratulations to Melissa Hegarty from Killarney who won the big prize in the
final Raheens draw at the weekend - a Renault Laguna. The winning ticket was a
Newbridge RFC ticket, sold to Melissa by her sister Grace whose generosity knows
no bounds by the simple fact she's been going out with Liam Heavey for sometime
now. Webmaster's grapevine informs me that quite a few NRFC-Raheens tickets were
sold down Kerry way thanks in no small part to people like Grace and Morgan
Foley, so thanks lads, in fact thanks to all who support and contributed so
generously to the draw. There'll be no living with Morgan if Kerry win Sam again
this year on the back of Munster's win and the Laguna heading to Kerry.
Best of luck to Luke Sullivan and Kath Shiels heading home to Oz. Couldn't
make the send-off myself but I believe there was a great night in Whitewater
last Saturday. Luke and Cath have endeared themselves greatly in the last year
to so many of the Newbridge RFC faithful, both on and off the pitch and will be
hugely missed. All in Newbridge RFC wish you safe trip home, thanks for all the
memories and best of luck to you for whatever comes next - and stay in touch!
New rugby rules coming into force for next season. Players are advised that
the new rule changes aka ELVs come into effect for all 15 a-side teams (incl
underage) from August 1st. NRFC rugby management and coaches will be attending
some seminars to get the briefing on what exactly it all means, but it's
advisable that all players also spend some time familiarising themselves with
the new rule changes - and consequences - that come into effect this season.

June 27th - U20s news from
Manners (Mr D. Mahon esq.)
Congrats to 2 of our U20 panel, prop Kevin Mc Carthy and 2nd row Daryl O
Hora who have been named in this season's Connacht u 20's squad.
I can confirm the line up for our 20's tournament as follows: Newbridge, Naas,
Shannon, Lansdowne, Dungannon and Instonians. It will be played on Sat the 20th
of Sept in Rosetown.
The lads in Trinidad are having a whale of a time - in particular Carl Daragh
who is top try scorer in the league over there. Surprisingly Michael Kindregan
is proving to be a massive hit with the ladies.
Dear Diary - Thoughts from abroad by U20 Gareth O'Reilly playing with Tauranga
Sports in NZ (edited slightly by

17 May 2008
No job yet but I'm going to look at an apartment this morning. It is really hard
to get a job out here. I have enough funds to last me a bit longer so I should
be fine for another couple of weeks at least. Got a car though. It's a little
Toyota Corolla with a dodgy radiator. It does the job. It cost me the equilivant
of 500 euros. So I cannot complain.
Man they take it serious over here. One guy's dad rang him after the match to
ask him what the score was and when he told him we lost 8-3 he just hung up on
him! All the lads are terrified to head back to the club house tonight cause all
the senior lads are going to be seiously pissed off! I'm dying with flu and
chest infection so did not get a game sadly.
Apparently the team we are playing next week are rock bottom and we are in 2nd
place at the moment. So they are expecting a big bounce back against them.
20 Jun 2008
Rugby going well. We have played two matches since my last diary entry. We won
the first one 87-7 against Kykura, and in which I got my first try in New
Zealand. I came on as flanker for 40 minutes. And last weekend we won 13-0
against Arataki. The coach put me on winger for about 25 minutes, cause they
have a shortage of backs and loads of forwards. It was an experience to say the
least. Had no clue what to do at all. We won anyway which is the important
thing. This weekend we have a local grudge match against Mount Maunganui at home
which everyone is getting psyched up for! The Mount are 1st in the league table
and we are 2nd. The top 8 out of 14 go into a round robin and then semi's and
the final. We have 3 matches left in the league so we are defo in the round
robin but we still want to come first in the league.
Training is good. We do A LOT of fitness sessions because we are pretty much the
only white team playing against the bigger Maori's. Trying to do my bit in the
gym as well 3-5 days a week. I'm working around 30-40 hrs a week in an Irish pub
which is fun but it is so quiet!
Wednesday June 25th
We hammered the Mount 37-10 at the weekend. It was brilliant to be part of it.
One of the best displays of underage rugby i have seen. I came on at hooker for
the last 15-20 mins so got a bit of run out. The ladies very friendly here. It
helps to have an Irish accent as well. Kindregan would like it here too.
June 24: Newbridge RFC Shorts&Shades Beach Party and BBQ
Surf's up dudes and dudettes on
Sunday August 3rd. Hosted by Whitewater Cafe Club, this is an important club
fundraiser for the new playing gear arriving in September. Tickets are only €10
and entry to the gig will be strictly ticket only.
Entertainment on the night includes BBQ, free draw, dancing and DJ all in a
beach setting. Party starts from 8.30pm 'til late.
Tickets will be available through team captains and managers. In fact they will
shortly be in contact with club members, both playing and non playing, with
tickets to sell. So get yourself and as many of your beach bum mates organised
for Sunday August 3rd. Webmaster promises to wear a shirt that could double as a
lighthouse.
It's a party, it's a fundraiser, it's a BBQ, it's a blast. It may well be the
only chance to have a beach party in Ireland without getting wet this summer.

June 18th - NRFC Volunteers required for
Lucozade Sport HEAD2HEAD roadshow.
Date: Monday June 23rd
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Sarsfields GAA
Lucozade Sport HEAD2HEAD has been developed to provide sportspeople with a
true test of their core skills, benchmarked against some of Ireland’s leading
sports stars.
Players get to prove themselves against the stars, against each other and
against other sports to see who is the sharpest and most skilled of all. Only on
the field of play will your players find a more exacting and demanding test of
their core skills.
The roadshow will be visiting Sarsfields GAA next Monday June 23rd. Rugby
players will be tested by former Newbridge RFC player Kevin Croke. Kevin plays
backrow for UCD and has represented Leinster at Senior, U19, U21 and development
levels as well as Ireland at U19s, University and Club level.
If the club can provide 30 volunteers for testing at the roadshow, we will receive some free training equipment.
Sounds like a good deal to me, plus you get an
idea of where you are after the following tests:
Speed
Using laser technology we’ll test players’ speed when running over 20 metres
to determine acceleration and speed.
Agility
We record a player’s ability to move quickly and change direction while
maintaining control and balance.
Hand-eye co-ordination
We measure a person’s ability to see, process and react to visual
information quickly over 30 seconds.
Strike/kick speed
We’ll test the speed of a players’ strike/kick by measuring maximal velocity
of the ball moving towards a Unipar speed gun device.
Vertical jump
Jumping is an integral part of most ball sports. So we’ll measure the total
explosive power from a standing position using a mat, which measures the height
the feet are off the mat.
Chin-ups
The ultimate test of upper body strength and endurance where we’ll measure
the number of chin-ups performed over a period of time.

June 13th - Mens pre-season training and U20
BBQ details
2008/09 Men's Pre-season training
Message from NRFC Director of Rugby, Colin Goode.
Pre - season training will start on Tuesday July 29th at 7.45pm in Newbridge
College and will continue every Tuesday & Thursday from then on. We will
have quite
a few new faces about competing for starting positions on both the 1sts & 2nds
and I expect competition to be fierce. It is important that everyone makes the
effort to attend pre season and arrive in decent shape. Everyone should be doing
some weights and fitness work throughout the summer on their own accord.
We have a tough and exciting season ahead of us so let make sure we do ourselves
and our club proud by putting the work in pre season and giving our selves the
best possible chance to compete well in Division 1!!!!
Goodie.

Newbridge RFC 2007/08 season photo slideshow DVD: I've created a couple
of copies of the slideshows that were posted on Youtube that can be played on
PCs and DVD players. I'll send them out shortly to the people who came back to
me and requested a copy - anyone else need a copy, email
webmaster@newbridgerugby.com
Webmaster was away in Mickey Mouse land (Orlando that is - not Naas) so this would explain the reason for no website updates over the last 2 weeks. I hope people cashed in on my double I recommended on the website messageboard in April - a €10 bet would have earned you a profit of €40!
NRFC 2007/08 Season Slideshow Review: Originally supposed to be shown at Friday's Dinner Dance but due to some technical gremlins, it was unable to be run on the night. Webmaster has no respect for gremlins however and his good work will not be denied to his adoring public, so I've placed the slideshow on Youtube in 4 chapters, where you can now view below. Webmaster can also burn these onto DVDs for viewing on laptops and home DVD players, so contact me if you'd like a copy.
