August 30th: Congrats to Manners and the rest of the organisers of Ladies Day. Thanks to everyone who supported the gig which raised a total of Euro2,295 for the Marie Keating Foundation and Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Ladies team also got their season underway with a decent performance against a strong Portarlington side. The first XV had it tough in their Hosie Cup match and couldn't build on their four-try first half performance. Read match report here and click here for photos.

And don't forget, sizzle, sizzle, Eggs and Rashers are back.

Newbridge Ladies

August 21st: All-Ireland Division 2 side Terenure paid a visit to Rosetown which saw another high-scoring pre-season game. With no Jon Downey playing, it gave other players a chance to score a few tries with Massey getting two, Brendan Tierney, Mark Kerrigan and Dave Hogey each getting one. Terenure won it 37-31, but it was great work out for the Newbridge squad ahead of next week's Hosie and Lalor Cup games against Portarlington. Read the match report here.

Don't forget to book your tickets for next Saturday's Ladies' Night after the Hosie game.

August 14th: Things are back in full swing. The first XV had a game against against a Wanderers XV in a 14-try thriller. Jonny Downey obviously enjoyed it notching up a hat-trick of tries against the famous Dublin club. Here's few pics:

June 14th: The Dinner Dance went very well with everyone getting the prizes they deserved (see the pics below). Well done to Colin and Shona who did a great job in getting everything organised.

Don't forget that a brainstorming meeting is being held on Saturday 19 June to come up with ideas for fundraising for the new changing rooms. The plan is to revamp the clubhouse and add to it during the close season of 2011. Already a number of events are being planned for next year. There is no cash in the piggy bank so we are starting from zero. The session starts at 10am.

Saturday June 12th.  Drinks reception 7.30pm, dinner 8.30pm sharp. Tickets €55. Dress code: Formal." (Not Black Tie, which means you don't have to rent or borrow monkey suit but don't turn up in t-shirts - use the suit for court appearances.)

April 26th: The season finally came to an end this weekend with the 1XV, 2XV and 3Xv all crashing out at semifinal levels. The magnificent 4XV, however, finished on a high note to bring the Michael Dunne Cup back to Rosetown (and then Johnsons via the Athgarvan Inn...read match report here). In the plate semi-final Clondalkin got some revenge for the early defeat by Newbridge in the Hosie Cup with a passionate performance at the Green Road. Match report here.

April19th:The 19s finished the season on high thanks their win over Clane in the North Midlands Plate final. See all the pictures here. Coaches Ryan O'Donnell and Barry Dempsey did a great job over the season and the players got to grips with the hard work they had to do to be competitive with the top teams. Next year Barry will be working his magic with the U21 squad while Ryan is staying at the helm for the U19s. Thanks to Ryan for the match report here.

April 18th: A busy weekend saw the U.19s win the North Midlands Plate with a 45-0 win over Clane. Congrats to flanker Eoin Walsh who then played for the first XV the next day putting in a good performance in the 40-10 Towns' Plate win over Longford. (Read match report). The 4XV reached the Dunne Cup final while the 1XV, 2XV and 3XV are all in semi-finals. Skerries cried off in the Seconds Provincial Cup with the 2XV who are now to play Portarlington. The 1XV now play Clondalkin as do the 3XV in the Spiers Cup and the 4XV meet Portlaoise next Sunday in the Dunne Cup decider.

April 16th: It's Friday night and a little bit late for updates, but there's been a few changes to fixtures. The U19s are playing tomorrow morning against Clane in Newbridge College at 11am. It's the semi-final of the North Midlands plate, so skip the supermarket shopping and have a look at the future of the club. The minis are hosting an end-of-season blitz and BBQ at Rosetown where any spare gas BBQs would be appreciated. The fun and games gets underway at 11.30am. Then on Sunday Meighan's Marauders face Wexford in Rosetown at 1pm in the Dunne Cup, while the 1st XV are playing Longford at the Green Road in the Towns' Plate also at 1pm. I wonder which match Manners will be at?

April 12th: The first XV fell foul of the Portlaoise jinx again in the Hosie Cup final (read the match report here), but still have a shot at redemption with the Towns' Plate quarter-final aginst Longford on Saturday. The second XV are also in the quarter-final of the Provincial Seconds Cup with a tough draw away to Skerries. Robert Meighan, however, showed off his organisational skills again with a 4XV that put 55-points on Carlow. He even backed it up with a good display at scrum half behind a pack with more than a few U19s and U20s. They're now in the semis with a game against Wexford this Saturday at home. Hopefully, on Saturday we'll also have the good news that Seapoint are leaving Division 1A and Newbridge are getting promotion. Might even be a bit of a party going on next Saturday night.

April 1st: The season's end may be drawing near, but the roller coaster ride ain't over yet. The Hosie Cup Final against Portlaoise has been scheduled for next Wednesday night at Cill Dara RFC, Beechpark. This will be a chance to avenge the Towns' Cup defeat and the players are going to need a full quota of mouthy supporters. Those who needed cardiac treatment after last Sunday's game need to unplug the monitor and get moving. After that there'll be the Towns Plate to look forward to, not to mention the 4XV Dunne Cup and the Provincial Seconds Cup. Aaagh, where my's tablets...

March 30th: Two days later and the Newbridge faithful are still clutching their chests, catching their breath as well as studying the AIL 3 table and working out the permutations of the qualifying round robin - come on Naas! But put that all to one side and take some time to enjoy a fine hearty serving of Eggs and Rashers, dripping with fat.

March 28th: The webheads thought it best to do the update tonight after the first XV's brilliant win over Monkstown, what with Johnsons callin, etc. This was an incredible dog-fight full of flair and bravery with the young guys really putting down their marker. Karl Darragh did his buttered pig impression to squeeze through for two tries, while like the good soldier he is Rory McCann hit the target from one-metre. Read the match report here. Whether Newbridge play 1A next year is down to what happens at the bottom of AIL 3 where Carlow and Naas are fighting relegation. Seapoint's bid for AIL status could also have a bearing on promotion matters. It's time to cheer for Naas...

March 25th: Even before the first XV get going on Sunday there's a full dance card for Friday and Saturday. On Friday the seconds play a friendly against Edenderry at 7.30pm followed by the U19s against Naas in the plate semi-final. To top off the night there's some crowd called Munster playing on TV as well. Saturday sees the full gamut of minis in action in blitzes all over the North Midlands. Rosetown is the venue for the U8s, kick-off at 10.30.

March 23rd: This is it!

Biggest weekend of the year, pack the car and get up to Westmanstown this Sunday for a 3pm kick-off. The 1XV have a job of work to defeat Monkstown to seal promotion to Div 1A. Monkstown showed there current form by defeating Coolmine last Sunday in the Spencer Cup-so no quarter asked for or given.

If you cannot make the journey to Lucan try the short hop to Rosetown to witness a potential classic as the 3XV take on local rivals Cilldara in the Anderson Cup.

Best of luck to all Newbridge teams this weekend !!!

March 15th: Eeouch! Portlaoise gave a demonstration of jail break rugby scoring four second half tries to put Newbridge out of sight in yesterday's Towns' Cup game in Rosetown. Ten minutes into the second half Newbridge were winning 11-8, but were too anxious to add more points to the board and left the back door unlocked. Such is life, read the match report here. Also photogrpaher Pat Tinsley took some pics of the grisly game, see them here. (Look out for Rory's 'grumpy face'.) Meanwhile we can all re-new our close personal acquaintance with Tullow next Sunday in the Towns' Cup Plate, followed by Monkstown on Sunday 28 March at Westmanston for the Division 1A play-off.

Champions! Provincial Seconds League 2010

Champions 2010

March 9: Dave Brannigan's seconds outfit brought the silverware home last Sunday. They needed a bonus point win and racked up what must be a club record to win 87-0. Smell the turf and share the action with the latest instalment of Eggs and Rashers. On the adjacent pitch the first XV and Garda served up a scintillating game of rugby that left a lot of us on the sideline slack-jawed and wide-eyed in amazement. Incredible stuff. Match report here. Tullow went down to Coolmine who took the league title and we're now facing a play-off game against Monkstown at a neutral venue for the righ to play in Division 1A next year.

Next Sunday the first XV will need to maintain that level of performance to get past Portlaoise in the second round of the Newstalk Provincial Towns' Cup. The Laois boys might not have had a good league season but they are notorious Cup campaigners and will be looking to salvage something out of their season. The support at Garda was great last Sunday and we need to get that vocal again to keep our lads motoring along nicely.

February 23: The latest batch of Eggs and Rashers has arrived with a blow-by-blow account of the second XV's heroics as well as the tale of the first XV's battles. Read it, if your are brave enough...

February 22: Enniscorthy arrived in Rosetown and did a job on our title hopes. It wasn't all bad news with Ben's tricky conversion kick bagging the vital bonus point, which all but guarantees us at least second place. Match report here. It's all down to Sunday week, away to Garda who have done their usual end-of-season Lazarus trick with a bonus point win against Wicklow. Snapper Pat Tinsley was on hand to take a few shots of the game which can be seen here.
Luckily there were no such speed-wobbles with the second XV who got a bonus point win at home against Enniscorthy leaving them with a shot for league glory. They play Garda at home this weekend and need a bonus point win to go top.
The Towns' Cup draw was made with Newbridge against Portlaoise at home in Rosetown on 14 March, in what could be a very interesting battle.

February 18th:

Final Big Push

Last weekend and Paris is put to bed now, I was in good form prior to the game as my 5 year old played for Newbridge for the first time against Naas in the well organised and well attended minis event at Rosetown. I stayed around to see one of the best games of the season when the 2nds defeated a very good Coolmine team (obviously not that good), it was full on and flowed back and forth but Stephen Melville scored a great try from a well executed move (the same move was tried in the first half but Rasher got it right the second time !). Noel Heavey was listening on the phone from Paris so he was in jubilent mood but it was not to last!

The ladies endured a bruiser on Sunday against Cill Dara with the ref reluctant to award anything to Newbridge (probably due to the very vocal 50 plus Cill Dara supporters against the 10 or so for Newbridge!)

All that matters this weekend is the 1 XV at home to Enniscorthy, a win definitely required as it's Garda away next and I think they have stayed up the last two years due to their efforts in the last game so lets all get out to Rosetown on Sunday and support both teams who who both looking and expecting League honours.

MinisVNaas

LOST: Who was spotted wearing the wrong jersey at last weeks minis v Naas !

February 7th: It's down to just two games, Enniscorthy at home on the 21st February and then away to Garda. We have a three-point cushion - it's all very intense and may even encourage some drinking on the part of the stressed out alikadoos. Today's game was real heroics from the full squad. Wicklow were a different kettle of fish compared to the away leg and at 17-13 with two minutes to go they went hell for leather. Read the first XV match report. Watch out here for Scooptube to see Karl Darragh's cracker of a try.
The seconds also had a big win running in six tries against Wicklow that keeps them in contention for honours.

February 1: Saint Brigid's Day and all is well is this part of Kildare after the first XV got over the tricky first round of the Towns Cup against Roscrea. Rasher provided the last-minute cream but Jonny Downey was Man of the Match with another trademark score off the back of the scrum. The tries are now up on Scooptube with Rasher in slow-motion. Click here to read the match report.
The third XV also did the business on Saturday against Railway Union while the second's date with the Guards was called off.
Don't forget it's Wicklow at home next Sunday in the League.

January 25th: The first XV got back to winning ways in pretty good style in a foggy and atmospheric Rosetown last Sunday. Even better was Jonny Downey's bonus point try in the last minute of normal time which puts a three-point gap between ourselves and Coolmine. (Match report.) Have a look at Jonny's subtlety on Scooptube.
The second XV slipped up against Kilkenny at the Green Road where Barry McCann made his claim for shiner of the season. Because this is a family website we can't show the picture
.
It is a break from League rugby next Sunday with the first round of the Towns' Cup. Newbridge have drawn Roscrea away and although the County Tipperary team have been struggling in Division 2 it is always a tough place to get a win.

January 19th : Big weekend of rugby coming up with all teams playing. A win required by the 1XV to keep up the promotion drive. The 2XV seek revenge against the leaders in their league. The 3XV travel hoping to have back to back victories over Wexford and the Ladies look to get some gametime and a win after a fractured season. All teams warrant your support. Also Eggs and Rashers back to kickstart 2010.

January 17th: Finally out of the deep freeze and with prop Mark Southern sporting a lovely new hairstyle, it was back to business. Unfortunately, Coolmine defrosted quicker and came out winners in a cracker of a game. Match report. Luckily, New Ross came a cropper with the Guards and so we stay on top by two points with four rounds left to go. Next week it's Kilkenny, who are fighting to stay out the relegation play-off zone, so it's going to be tough with lots of vocal home supporters needed at Rosetown.

January 8th: The Leinster branch have called off all Leinster club games this weekend. Hopefully things will have thawed out before the 17th when Coolmine will be visiting Rosetown. Either way we'll have to make sure they get a hot reception. The weather is so bad even the Under 8s training tonight has been called off - it was only -13C last night. Wusses...

Hosie Cup 2009

January1st: All victorious Roman generals were warned that glory is fleeting, while for Newbridge or Portlaoise Hosie Cup glory has been postponed. The postcard seasonal weather unfortunately doesn't allow for rugby so the game has been postponed until a later date.
It's business as usual on January 10th with Wicklow coming to Rosetown looking for revenge. Beware of mountain men bearing grudges..

December 30th: Nice report on the Leinster web site www.leinsterrugby.ie about Saturdays Hosie Cup Final at 1:30pm in Athy. We may be flying in the League but Trophys in the cabinet are what counts. Best of luck to all involved with the 1XV and we need a big crowd of supporters to shout us on to victory.

If it helps I will bring my 1993 and 1997 Hosie Cup tankards (Heineken were the sponsors and tankards were the order of the day) to show the players how difficult is always was to win Hosie cups and I think it will be no different on Saturday.

HosieTankard

December 21st: The first XV juggernaut rolls on after a deserving 26-11 Hosie Cup win over Athy. (Match report). That sets up the final against Portlaoise on 2 January at a neutral venue. Newbridge last won the Hosie Cup in 1996 so hopefully this will be a chance to finally stop former captain and best looking prop in Ireland (according to himself), Martin Donnelly, from boasting about his exploits.

Meanwhile it's been business as usual for the Minis where a special visitor turned up last Saturday morning. Santa is pictured below having a discussion with the club's Elf and Safety Officer, Mick Ryan.

December 14th: Don't forget next Saturday Newbridge are away to Athy in the Hosie Cup. A win in the Showgrounds will set up a final with Portlaoise and a shot at some silverware.

Also, the Eggs and Rashers have been delivered fresh from the larder at Blackgates.

On Saturday morning the U19’s qualified for the quarter-final of the Leinster League with a 3-0 win over Gorey. It's the first time in a few years where Newbridge have qualified for this stage of the competition after last year losing out on points difference. Gorey never put the Newbridge line under pressure until the dying moments when the Newbridge defence held firm. Newbridge haven't conceded a try in over three games.  Shane Taffee, Sean Murphy, Lars Jones, Andrew Downes and Ciaran Nolan all put in great performances.

December 13th: Blackgates turned out to be a very happy hunting ground with wins for the firsts (22-16) and seconds (31-3). There were some dynamic displays among the Newbridge forwards with fullback Karl Darragh proving very accurate with four penalties, a drop goal and a conversion. Poor old captain Rory McCann could only muster up a single try. Still, it was enough. Fair dues to Manners who mixed up the personnel and the game plan to keep the Tullow defence guessing. Declan Kidney will be reaching for the phone sometime soon... It was a proud moment too for the Southern family with brothers Eddie, Mark and John playing together for the first time and out of their skins.
The seconds saw one excellent individual try by Johnny Mullins who unfortunately sacrificed his hamstring in the process. Seconds' captain Dave Brannigan got two tries, putting it up to the senior captain. Happy Christmas! First XV Match report here.

December 9th: It's been awhile but Eggs and Rashers have been served. Included in it are all the glorious details of the second XVs fine win last Sunday.

December 7th: It was hard going at Rosetown on Sunday where New Ross edged out a 9-0 win. With Tullow and Coolmine losing as well it cut the Newbridge cushion at the top of the league to just three points. No doubt Manners and the lads will take in the lessons learned and put it to good effect against Tullow this Sunday. Read the match report here. The trip to Blackgates is the last league game before Christmas for supporters to get behind the players. It wasn't all doom and gloom - Branno's second XV won impressively 22-6 against New Ross, keeping them in contention at the right end of the league table.

November 25th: The Dobey Cup was relaunched last Friday night in great style with a 40-19 win for Newbridge against the Defence Forces Training Centre. Winning captain Dave Hogan accepted the Cup from Martin Dobey, after words of welcome and congratulations from the president of the Defence Forces Rugby Club, Major General Sean McCann (pic on the left, below) and Newbridge vice-chairman Tom Treacy (on the right) who appears to be launching into a story about how he got the nickname 'The Thrasher'... The Dobey family turned up in force with three of Barney and Joan's sons, a daughter-in-law, eight grandchildren and two nephews. It was a great job by Rory McCann in organsing players and by Sean Hayes who helped to revive the Dobey Cup in what promises to become a great annual fixture. Needless to say the celebrations were getting into the swing of it long after the more sensible crowd had gone home to bed.

Newbridge U19s are away to North Kildare this Saturday, 5th December, in an encounter to decide second or third place in their league section. A second place finish guarantees a home quarter-final so the improving colts' team still have a lot to play for and hopefully some of the Rosetown faithful will be able to make the trip to lend some vocal support.

November 23rd: Halfway through the league campaign and Newbridge are top of the table with a six point cushion. The weather was so bad yesterday you wouldn't put a bin out in it, but our intrepid first XV and bench still got a win and did without wearing water wings (Match report). Fair dues also to the U19s who got an away win against Clane last Saturday morning (Match report).

This Friday night at 7.30pm sees Rosetown's first competitive floodlit match between Newbridge and the Defence Forces Training Centre for the Dobey Cup. The trophy is named after Barney Dobey who was a real servant to rugby in the area and the Curragh RFC.

November 16th: The weather played havoc with the fixtures this weekend. Both the first and third XV games were called off. No doubt they'll all be tanned, rested and ready for the series of home matches at Rosetown this Saturday and Sunday. Newbridge are playing Garda at firsts and seconds on Sunday while the thirds entertain Rathdrum on the Saturday. Also on Saturday the fast-improving 19s are away to Clane, kick-off is at 11am so it's a good chance to check the young and up-coming talent in club.

The clock is ticking down for the last few tickets for the Casino Night this Friday 20th November in the White Water pub. The doors open at 8pm and Casino starts at 9pm. For your €30 entry fee you get a chance to win a top prize of €1,000 and several other prizes.  Total prizes valued at €3,000. Who ever wins the most chips wins the top prize, and so on. There will be several top prizes valued at least €500 and many more spot prizes. The tickets are limited to 150, check availability with Tony Casserly (086 8282210).

November 11th: The first XV are back in Hosie Cup action this Saturday at 2pm, away to Athy who are flying high in Division 2. It's business as usual for the second XV who are playing their postponed league game away to Kilkenny, kick-off at 2.30pm. A big thanks to Rik for the great action shots from Enniscorthy. At least he made the boys look real purty... And don't forget to check out Eggs and Rashers for a different kind of picture of our day out in County Wexford. The U19s have also been in action with a hard earned draw against a Newbridge College XV, read the match report.

Ben HurAxel at workRob

November 9th: The first XV marched on to another win, but not without forcing the rest of us to finish off our finger nails and anxiety tablets. It was also a bonus point win in a real cauldron where the 'Scorthy sideline men stoked the atmosphere. Doyler, who was running the sideline, has been nominated for a medal of valour. (Match report). The second XV also ground out a win going 14-0 ahead and then spending the rest of the day defending it to win 14-10. The valiant third XV were away in up-market Terenure where a CYM team gave Newbridge a hard time winning 29-3.

November 2nd: Newbridge march on with another fine win in Leinster League 1B (match report). The game was changed to Kilkenny due to the weather but this did not appear to bother our lads who once again produced the goods to take us two points clear of Coolmine in the table. Enniscorthy away next Sunday presents new challenges at the earlier kick off time of 2:30pm. For a real insight read the latest Eggs and Rashers fresh from the chicken's...

3XV: Gutsy win of the week goes to the 3rd XV who defeated Wexford at the Green Rd on Saturday when most of you were sheltering from the thunder and lighting. But it only served to spur this unique blend of young and old, that Jerry Delaney has drawn together ,on to greater things. A win under the belt is all that team needed so hopefully things will continue to improve.

Ladies: The Ladies XV have stuttered a bit after a reasonable start but will try to get the wheels turning again with a fixture against Barnhall this Thursday the 5th November at 8pm in Rosetown under lights.

UPC Kit for Clubs: The club is now signed up for this initiative. If you purchase any services from upc the club earns points and can exchange these points for rugby training equipment.

Go to http://www.upc.ie/about_us/kitforclubs/ for more infomation.

October 27th: Latest match report, Newbridge v Tullow last Saturday, also Eggs and Rashers.

**
The funeral arrangements for Edward (Ned) Southern are; reposing at home in Martinstown from 6pm this evening (October 27). Removal Wednesday evening at 6.30 pm. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery after 11am Mass at St Brigid's Church,Suncroft.

October 26th: Message from club secretary Fiona Nugent;
We would  like to extend our deepest sympathy to Eddie, Mark, Johnny and Caroline Southern on the death of their father Ned Southern, who passed away last night. The Southern family are an integral part of our club and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time. F
uneral arrangements later.

October 26th: Ryan O'Donnell's U19 squad have been quietly working away while the firsts have been getting all the glory. They started off their 2009 season the same way they finished 2008. With a much more experienced squad the 19’s have won three of their first four games beating Terenure 35 -25, Clondalkin 35 – 0, Gorey 15 – 5 and losing to Portlaoise 27 -7. Playing a very experienced Portlaoise side Newbridge were competitive throughout and played better than the score line suggests. With a number of players regularly scoring tries and getting stronger with every game the 19’s are aiming to be at the business end of the North Midlands and Leinster League competitions this year. All players born in 1991 and 1992 are eligible to play at this level so if you know anyone interested in playing please contact Ryan on 086-8329665.

The Newbridge U19s in action:

The 19s in action

October 22nd: The senior execs have sent forth word that those members who have paid up by 31 October will have first call on the international tickets. To make things real easy, membership and ticket packages can be paid for by clickety-clicking RIGHT HERE. A email with the small print has gone out, but anyone with questions about the terms and conditions should contact Ger Barry or Fiona Nugent.

Hog Heaven, or actually prop heaven will become an earthly reality next Tuesday night at 8pm in Rosetown with Irish and Leinster legend Reggie Corrigan on hand for a front row coaching session.

October 19th: It was a great 25-18 win for the first XV against Coolmine on Sunday. Newbridge have a great blend of youth and experience on the team - some players can even combine the two. It was a classic game of rugby played at full tilt that kept everyone enthralled (even Mackey). Match report.
The seconds had it tougher but their 9-9 draw could well be all the difference at the business end of the season, so congrats to Branno's crowd as well.
The first XV's replay against Tullow takes place this Saturday at 3pm in Rosetown - a full house of supporters is needed for this one.

The ladies may also have a game under lights at 7pm on Saturday although this has yet to be confirmed. There's also the small matter of the Hallowe'en Party to finsh off the day and night:
Newbridge RFC Halloween Hellraiser Fancy Dress Party.
Saturday, 24 October in Rosetown clubhouse from 9pm until late. Tickets 5 euro at door or from team captains this week.
Prizes for best costume, raffle, DJ until late and more...

Fresh from the box, the lastest Eggs and Rashers.

Sometimes a picture can say more than a thousand words...

October 16th: Don't mind the side show in Brive tomorrow - the real action is going down tonight in Donnybrook at 7pm when a Legends side made up of former Leinster and Ireland players take on the Legend Killers - which includes Manners on the wing. In aid of Dublin Neurological Institute and St Vincent's Hospital it will feature such household names as Nick Popplewell, Spud Murphy, Reggie Corrigan, Shane Byrne, Brian Rigney, Victor Costello, Steve McIvor and Richard Wallace. To think, for just a tenner you could see Trevor Brennan closing down that certain winger. Donations can also be given to Manners on Sunday.

October 15th:
For those fans of E&R, you'll be relieved to know that normal service has been resumed. A veritable font of Eggs and Rashers (or click link in the left hand panel if this one doesn't work) has been building pressure for weeks as the newbie webmasters struggled with the technical details. The sluice gates have now been opened...

October 12th:Yet Another League Victory:The 1XV and 2XV continue to march on in the league with some more great victories Match Report. We have Coolmine away next week, already it appears to be the biggest game as they currently top the league alongside Newbridge. They are coached by Willie Anderson (as in Ireland link arms and bear down on All Blacks during Haka fame) so it will be big occasion for all and as much support as in possible is required. Bernard Jackman, former coach to both clubs, will also be there on the day.

Rematch
Also the Tullow 1XV League game has been re-scheduled for Saturday 24th October at 3pm in Rosetown. The least said about it the better but the same result a second time around would be brilliant.

Lighting Up Ceremony
The lights in Rosetown were turned on last Friday for the Minis.

Subs Overdue
We are well into October so if you are a player and you have not paid your subs then You Should Not Be Playing!

The following has been passed onto us by the Leinster Branch It has been brought to our attention that many clubs, particularly in the Leinster League are not observing the Technical Zone regulation.

The regulation is:PLAYING ENCLOSURE AND TECHNICAL ZONES(1) All Leinster Branch approved fixtures shall be played on pitches that conform to the regulations stated by the International Rugby Board.
(2) The playing enclosure of the main (first XV) pitch should be defined by a fence unless impractical when it shall be defined by a rope.
(3) If there is a stand seats should be made available for subs.
(4) Two technical zones to be designated, clearly marked with white paint, each nine metres long and three metres wide and not less than two metres from the touchline, one on either side of the halfway line, in which benches shall be placed to accommodate substitutes, and three members of the coaching/medical staff. If there is no bench the substitutes must remain outside the barrier. The referee shall order them out of the playing enclosure if they fail to adhere to this requirement. A persistent failure to comply shall result in the team being reported to the Leinster Branch and sanctions applied as provided and set out elsewhere in these regulations.
(5) Coaches are precluded from entering the playing enclosure (excluding the players’ technical zone) during the course of a game except at half time. 3XV Call to Arms The 3rd XV are now well up and running, if you have little to do on a Saturday afternoon you could not do worse than lend them your support - they have a committed coach (some say should be committed) in Damien Strick and are led on the field by the evergreen Gerry Delaney. If you are an up and coming player who wishes to gain a foothold on the ladder to stardom or an old relic (say nothing !)who still has a few games left then give Gerry (087 2339600) a ring and get out there.

Hearing into the eligibility of 1 of the Newbridge players to play with Newbridge v Tullow in Leinster League 1B on Sunday 4th October
The above matter, and subsequent objection by Tullow RFC, was heard by a delegation appointed by the LBRFU Competitions Committee on October 6th.In attendance were delegations from Newbridge RFC and Tullow RFC:The Committee listened to points of view from both sides before considering an outcome. The decision of the Competitions Committee is that the game will be replayed in Newbridge RFC on Sunday 25th October or an agreed date on that weekend. If Newbridge can’t or will not play Tullow will be awarded the game, if Tullow can’t or will not play the original result (23-18 win for Newbridge) will stand. For further information on the matter please contact Aidan Feighan chairman@newbridgerugby.com

Webmaster Update: Today marks the end of Webmasters reign. Once webmaster and the new webmaster ran together but no longer.New webmaster has two assistants who will each take a section of the website and hopefully make improvements and make this site one of the best around.Thank You: I think all will agree that Webmaster has done us proud with www.newbridgerugby.com so far and it will be a big task to improve on what we have but we are up for the challenge.I know he will be keeping his log on credentials in case we go wild but we will eventually remove this privilege ! Hopefully he can help with my indenting problem !!!

October 1st: League up and running and what a start too. A great start to the league campaign for out 1XV and 2XV in New Ross last weekend with both teams coming home with 2 wins. New Ross is not an easy place to win in and will remain that way for the rest of the season, so the 2 wins from the men's teams are an important and significant result in our plans for promotion this season. Last weekend's heroics have been immortalised forever in the latest edition of Eggs&Rashers. Another huge challenge this weekend is the visit of Tullow, who will be also keen on adding a win to their comprehensive beating of Wicklow last weekend. Please note - the 2XV match will be played in Green Road at 1pm, the 1XV will kick-off in Rosetown at 3pm.

Rugby back in Rosetown. NRFC Exec is pleased to announce that our 1XV will play their opening league game in Rosetown this Sunday k.o 3pm. The 2XV game is in Green Road, k.o 1pm.A huge amount of work has been carried out (and money spent!!) in Rosetown since the end of last season and despite the setback of the wettest summer on record, we're still able to meet our target of playing league games in Rosetown this season. Credit due in no small part to the work Ger Barry and Paul Archbold have put in in order to keep the project on schedule. Work is continuing in Rosetown on the floodlights and pitches for the next 2-3 weeks so please take care when walking through the carpark and walking to and from the pitch. There are a number of pitch areas still under repair and we request your co-operation and support in staying away from the construction plant and materials in the carpark and the grounds under repair.  We expect to have partial floodlight capability by the end of next week, and full floodlight capability the week after. The new main pitch will not be available until after Christmas. For those not out in Rosetown since last season, you will see a lot of changes and additions to the playing areas. We encourage you to come out on Sunday not only to support the team but also to view the work and improvements underway. Plans are afoot to have a grand night out with a match under lights in a few weeks. Details to follow shortly....

Website updates - apologies to all for the lack of updates lately. Rest assured the new website team is working hard behind the scenes. There's been some unforeseen technical gliches trying to link the new website software up to the website server in the US (the team was working late into the night last Saturday to overcome these problems and no beer was consumed during that time - mainly because it wasn't offered). In the meantime and in order to satisfy the apparently insatiable demand out there for NRFC website news, old webmaster will continue to provide a basic service on the website until the lads have all the bugs addressed and can provide a full service - very shortly.

September 2nd: Minis Registration Sept 4th and 5th.

Newbridge RFC 2009/10 Membership

A note from club Chairman Aidan Feighan

We would like to invite you to renew your annual club membership for the 2009/2010 season. Newbridge RFC is undertaking an important membership drive for the coming season. This is being done so as to increase our membership base and realise more revenue from our members in order to fund further improvements in the facilities for playing and non playing members. We're already in the final stages of upgrading our training and playing pitches and floodlighting (all pitches) to a very high standard and expect to start using these facilities later in September. Now we want to turn our attention to upgrading the clubhouse and dressing rooms, showers and toilet facilities.

In previous years, the lion's share of all membership dues would have been absorbed by traditional operational overheads (heat, power, insurance etc..). While we are actively pursuing a dual policy of operational cost cutting within the club and applying for additional lottery funding for our clubhouse and changing room upgrades, the reality is that neither of these measures will be sufficient to raise anything close to the amount of capital/funding required in order to undertake an upgrade project like this.

The bottom line is this: If we are all to enjoy and take pride in a modern, 1st class, safe and clean rugby facility in the future, then we, the membership, are going to have to contribute accordingly. Recruit 500 is one of the key fund raising initiatives that Newbridge RFC will be employing this season.

We are very aware of the strain that current economic trends are putting on everyone. In light of this, and following lengthyconsultation with a cross section of our members we have come up with a membership payment scheme that we feel will benefit everyone.

The scheme will facilitate members paying their subscription by direct debit on a monthly payment basis. Basic membership is Bronze Membership. Members can also avail of Gold Membership which incorporates membership subscription and participation in the Club Lotto. We are discounting the amount payable to encourage participation.

Minis and Youths

Minis: Subs for the coming season will be € 80.00 for one child, €150.00 for two children and € 210.00 for three children. This will include membership and a club jersey for each child.

Youths: The same fees will apply to youths but with a pair of rugby shorts and socks replacing the jerseys.

Family Membership

Family membership includes:

• Membership for two adults (one with AGM voting rights and Int’l ticket rights)

• Membership for all eligible playing minis and youths.

• Relevant kit for maximum of two playing minis/youths.

Club Discount Card

We are introducing a new discount card scheme for all paid up members. In a Newbridge RFC initiative, we have joined forces with other local sporting clubs in the area to form a partnership with local businesses. The discount card will entitle the member to a preferential discount in all participating businesses. We hope that the new membership, together with the Club Discount Card will provide members good value. All paid up members including minis/youths will be issued with a discount card.

In these challenging times, with decreasing club revenue coming from traditional sources of sponsorship and bar take, I cannot stress enough the importance of the Recruit 500 membership initiative to Newbridge RFC's ongoing plans to transform Rosetown into a 1st class rugby facility. I would like to thank Noel Heavey and his team for the incredible hard work and planning they have put into this initiative throughout the summer. I think you will agree with me once you have considered the details that it is indeed a great package and excellent value for money. I urge you to throw your support behind NRFC Recruit 500 and ensure it and the club's continued growth and success.

I look forward to seeing you in Rosetown soon and wish all members and their families an enjoyable and successful season.

Yours in Rugby,

Aidan Feighan

Club Chairman

August 24th: NRFC membership details: The 2009 season is about to kick off and now is your chance to be part of a bigger, stronger Newbridge RFC. This summer €400,000 has been spent on improving the playing pitches at Rosetown and there are more development plans to come. Coach Dave Mahon has assembled an impressive squad of senior players while the U21s and U19ss are all set to continue making great strides. Last week saw an incredible 94 players out training.

It is vital the club keeps the momentum going and gets our 500 members to sign up early. A new membership package includes a discount card for shops and businesses in Newbridge (some offering 40 per cent off) and rugby kit for the mini-members. Details to follow shortly.

Welcome to Massey Tuhakaraina: Belately so (sorry Massey). NRFC are delighted to announce the signing of back Massey Tuhakaraina. Massey, who has also played at New Zealand 7s, New Zealand U21 and New Zealand Maori U21 level, joins Newbridge from AIL side Portadown RFC. Massey brings a wealth of experience and is a key addition to our squad and our efforts to gain promotion to the Leinster League Premier Division for next season. Make sure to welcome Massey to Rosetown next time you see him.

Welcome also to Ben Swindlehurst's parents who are touring Europe and have popped over to Ireland to see their favourite son. Webmaster 'rescued' them for an hour or so from the Shorts n' Shades party in Whitewater and brought them to the relatively calm oasis that is Johnsons. After several beers, we all concluded and agreed that Ben is indeed a fine young man and should be reminded as such as much as possible by his rugby playing peers.

Tour to Westport last weekend. What happens on tour stays on tour (I wasn't on the tour), but I did get 2 nuggets of info. 1. The lads beat Westport and 2. I'm glad I wasn't changing trains in Athlone last Sunday... 'nuf said.

Eggs and Rashers - 2 long lost jewels uncovered!! Whilst clearing out my website locker in anticipation of the new webmaster management team moving in very shortly, I came across 2 up to now unreleased E&R episodes (okay I plain forgot to put them up at the time) from last seasons Heineken ERC semi and final weekends (you know - the one where we beat Munster out the gate in Croker and the one where we lifted the ERC making us Champions of Europe thereby rubbishing the Munster theory that you need to lose a couple of finals before you win one and also rubbishing the Munster mental block of not being able to beat English opposition in the final (i.e Northampton & Leicester). They both make for great reading and bring back a lot of good memories. Click Here. Noel has indicated in his last E&R e-mail to me that maybe it's time to retire the frying pan, change the diet and and eat sushi rolls instead. Don't know about you but I reckon E&R was one of the highlights of this website and it (and the world) will be a much duller place without it. If you agree with me, show your appreciation for E&R to Noel next time you see him and maybe,JUST MAYBE, he'll give it a go for one more season. After all, it took me 3 attempts over 5 seasons before I managed to successfully retire from rugby.....

July 10th: Website updates: Webmaster apologies to all for lack of updates to the website over the summer. Due partly to the (outside of rugby) workload but also as I'm moving 'upstairs' in the NRFC administration pyramid & will be required to wear a blazer from time to time, so  I knew I would be vacating the webmaster role - which I will be shortly.... Ehhh, this is my excuse for extreme laziness and I'm sticking with it. Okay?

The good news is there are a couple of Jedi knight-type characters lined up who are the final stages of learning the black art of webmastery and will hit the ground running shortly with a newly designed website. It will still be www.newbridgerugby.com and as always for website enquiries or if you have news, reports or photos to submit e-mail webmaster@newbridgerugby.com  The new webmasters are a fairly (?!?) open-minded bunch, so if you have ideas for the new website, send them on to the webmaster e-mail address.

U18 Plate semi final this Wednesday (April 22):
Barry Dempsey, Richard Larkin & Ryan O'Donnell's troops are in action next Wednesday night in Naas RFC at 7.30pm in the semi-final of the U18 plate against the combined forces of Athy & Cill Dara (AC Pirates). AC Pirates are a premier league side playing against a division one side in Newbridge. A very well resourced and experienced AC Pirates team come into to this game as red hot favourites and they expect to progress easily into the final next week. In saying that, Newbridge have progressed well this season and will look to cause an upset on the night. Come out and support the lads some of which include, Pascal & Reds nephew Brian Duggan, Captain Neil Hogan (Dave's brother), Leinster Youths trialists Owen Walsh & Daniel Doyle, Trinidads finest Kendall & Zane, Under 16 Star David Mullins and many more.

April 17th: NEWBRIDGE RFC APPOINT NEW COACHING TEAM FOR 2009 2010 SEASON Newbridge Rugby Football have announced the appointment of a David Mahon as club coach for the 2009-2010 season.  His appointment comes after a disappointing season for the club where the 1st XV found the going particularly difficult in Division 1.

David Mahon learned his rugby in Newbridge College and after a playing career in Bective Rangers returned to finish with Newbridge.  Having whetted his managerial appetite with the Bective under 20s, he coached Tullow to promotion from Division 3 to Division 2 in 1999.  He has spent the past two seasons coaching the highly impressive Newbridge under 20s, a role that has seen him guiding some of the future stars of Newbridge.

David’s appointment is a reflection of the clubs intention to produce home grown coaches and progress those within the club.  He built an under 20s side in the club who progressed to the dizzy heights of the JP Flanagan Pennant semi final this year having dispatched some serious senior club opposition on the way.

Speaking after the announcement David said “I am very excited and honoured to be the new club coach in Newbridge.  I'd like to acknowledge the efforts of Des Rigney in bringing the club to Division 1.  He has laid the foundation from which I will work.  My work with the under 20s in the past few years has allowed me to view the exceptional talent coming through the club.  Des played a big part in filtering the younger players to senior level.  The challenge for me now is to bring the club to the Premier Division blending the best of experience and youth.”

Work for next season is well under way with Newbridge also announcing the appointment of Kevin Croke as forwards coach.  Kevin is a product of the Newbridge youth system and has progressed through Ireland Youths, 19s, 21s and Ireland seven aside.  He has captained the Irish club side whilst playing his rugby in UCD.  Continuing on the theme of the return of some home grown talent, former Curragh youth, Lansdowne Captain and Leinster player Enda Bohan will advise on the dark laws of the scrummaging world.

Club President Peter Flanagan expressed his delight at the announcement.  “I would like to acknowledge the contribution of Des Rigney to our club over the past two seasons.  He brought us to Division 1 and instilled a mental and physical toughness in our players the likes of which we did not have before.  David has proven himself to be a top class coach in our under 20s set up.  It is only fair that the club reward home grown coaches who complete the required courses and who instil that experience in the young men and women of our club.  David has given 100% to our club cause as a player, and a coach.  I am delighted for him and wish him and the team every success.”

Leinster-Munster semi-final tickets through the club: The club has been given an extremely small allocation of tickets (30) for the HEC semi final between Leinster & Munster. We've agreed the best and fairest thing to do is to raffle these amongst the club members. A couple of rules: 1. Only fully paid up members are allowed to enter the draw. 2. Entry fee is €20 and must be paid (not promised) before the draw. 3. Draw will take place Thursday April 23rd, 8pm in Rosetown clubhouse. 4. Winners of tickets must give commitment that they will use the ticket on themselves - i.e they must not pass it on or sell it on. 5. Judges decision on the night is final.

Contact John Dardis Jnr if you want to enter the draw - or click here to email him.

April 2nd: Newbridge U18s still playing competitive rugby

Newbridge U18 continued their progression this year with a hard fought win over Clane in Rosetown on Saturday morning.  Scoring 5 tries through Max Duffy (2), Paul McDonald (2) and Eoin Walsh (1).  It was a much improved display by Newbridge who fielded a new front 5 for this game from the previous week's loss to Portlaoise in the Cup. With very much a squad ethos in play this season, the Newbridge U18's have played 40 players in competitive games this season with the latest addition - David Mullins, fresh from his heroics last week beating Clondalkin and scoring 19 points added greatly to the performance of the U18's.  This Saturday the U18's play Carlow in Newbridge. Note: Match conceded by Carlow. Newbridge into plate semi final. Details TBC

Note: Newbridge U20s Purcell Cup game v Trinity on Sunday is now switched from College Park to Santry.

March 30th: Who is Newbridge RFC's winningest team this season? Well my money is on the U14s. Click here to check on their progress in February and March. Apologies to all for not posting these sooner. Keep them coming in, I'll post quicker next time.

March 26th: Mad as a March hare - photos from the Wales-Ireland night in Rosetown. Photos courtesy of Colin O'Brien. March 23rd: What a weekend of rugby. You'll never beat the Irish. After dashing back from the airport to catch the 2nd half of the Wales-Ireland match, webmaster (along with the nation) was put through the emotional grinder for that 2nd half. Like Paul O'Connell I thought it was curtains as soon as the Stephen Jones penalty was on it's way but soooo glad I was wrong. I don't think I've ever been so physically and emotionally wasted after watching a game. Congrats to all - the squad, the management and the backroom team. It's a real shot in the arm for Irish rugby. Congrats too to ex Newbridge College players Geordan Murphy and Jamie Heaslip who featured all through the 6N campaign. We'll temporarily overlook the Naas RFC connection in view of these special times.... Webmaster didn't venture out to the club on Sat evening but I believe the Fantasy Rugby and BBQ night was a huge success. Thanks to Colin O'Brien, Rory McCann and all who helped organise it. Rumour has it that it was getting fairly wild late in the evening. Any incriminating evidence will be glady posted on the website. E-mail photos, videos, stories etc.. to webmaster@newbridgerugby.com

U20s JP Flanagan campaign is over
