What happens on tour......
....sometimes doesn't stay on tour. Thanks to the miracles of modern technology, Scoop has managed to piece together an excellent video of the tour to Toulouse last month - with very catchy background music too! Scoop has come along way technology-wise. It wasn't that long ago he thought a blackberry was something you made jam out of. Hopefully this video will jog Scrubber's memory, which appears to have blotted out the entire weekend. Too much Toulouse sausage Nicky...? May 21st: Rugby - Tropical Style:  Bon Voyage and Bon Chance go to two of NRFC's U20's who are travelling to Trinidad to play rugby for the summer. Paul Gillespie and Brian Grady are travelling to the Caribs club. Manners informs me Bective used to send a couple of guys down every year and it proved to be a huge success. Not a lot wrong with chilling by the pool in the Caribbean and playing a bit of rugby. It beats the hell out of going to South Africa and being chased around by angry Dutch farmers. Webmaster has been to the Caribbean a couple of times on 'business trips' & highly recommends Puerto Rican Don Q rum and Dominican Republic Presidente beer (though not at the same time). If anybody wants to check their progress the club website is http://www.caribsrfc.com/index.php?section=index  They will be heading out the first week in June. Lads - register on the NRFC message board and send us reports of how you're getting on.

May 18th: AGM Summary (from Hon Sec and NRFC Nobel Prize Man of the Year - JD) .

We had a really positive AGM last night with 55 in attendance. Players turned out in numbers.

The Officers for next season remain unchanged.
Club President: Niall Kidd
Chairman: Niall Browne
Hon Secretary: John Dardis
Hon Treasurer: Ger Barry

Club Captain: Rory McCann
Ladies Captain: Lisa Morrissey
2nd XV Captain: Sean Treacey
3rd XV Captain: Pascal Behan

We have a new executive committee after a vote.
Mick McCoy and Gerry Hall decided to stand down with Mick getting more involved in Leinster Rugby (still have to get a picture of him in a Leinster tie!) and Gerry agreeing to help out on the area committee.

The new executive is
Noel Heavey
Pearse McCorley
Valerie Finn
Jamie Fletchmore*
Aidan Feighan*
Colin O’Brien*

*denotes new member

Hard luck to Don O'Keeffe and Greener who missed out on the vote. Don has been involved in the executive for a number of years and has been a great support to me personally and in particular in the link with the Defence Forces. Greener is always willing to lend a hand to any gig in the club. So stay involved lads

The work starts now for next season (in fact it started last December!). The new executive will be hands on and approachable so lets do the business.

Thanks to all for turning up.

JD

May 16th: HonSec's Club News:

1. The Annual Dinner Dance was another outstanding night with a great turnout particularly of players. The formalities of the evening were kicked off by Club Chairman Niall Browne, who despite a Freudian slip which eluded to NRFC training the Munster minis he handed over to Connie Mac who did the business with a look over the season.
Niall Kidd presented the awards on the night, for prosperity the winners were
1st XV Captain: Rory McCann
1st XV Player: Johnny Downey
Ladies Captain: Lisa Morrissey
Ladies Player: Julie Doyle
2nd XV Captain: Mick Doran
2nd XV Player: Sean Tracey
3rd XV Captain: Jerry Delaney
3rd XV Player: Kevin Fagan

Special Award for Irish International Squad Members: Julie Doyle and Catriona Ni Caba Club

Person of the Year. John Dardis

I must admit to being absolutely overwhelmed by the response of everyone to my own little award! Particularly the players. It was a very special night and I am very grateful to all our club members for bestowing such an honour on me.

2. DONT FORGET OUR AGM THURSDAY 17th MAY 8pm Rosetown. It is set up to avoid soccer so please please come along and help to decide the future of our club.

May 2nd: County Kildare Win Dunne Cup: Congrats to Captain Wayne Middleton, coach Dave Doran and the squad of players and backroom staff as County Kildare are now this season's holders of the Dunne cup after a 24-05 win over County Offaly this evening in Portlaoise. Some good rugby on offer and the scoreline is probably a little flattering to the Kildare men. Did the Newbridge lads feature? Well Eddie, Mick, Dennis and Paul Wafer had great games. Sean Treacy was very unlucky not to get a run. Richie was going well until be caught a boot on the chin (it was an accident) and had to go off for stitches. Johnny Downey had a cracker after coming on at half time and scored a well earned try at the end. Noel Heavey was his usual ball of nerves, decibels and one-liners.........oh, and Rory McCann scored a hat-trick. Quite how he got in the dressing room door at the end with such a big head is beyond me....! Well done to all and thanks to all who showed up and supported the team so well. Good to see a sizeable Newbridge contingent there. Webmaster took his trusty camera along and took some pics - now in the Latest Photos section.

The match will be played at Portlaoise RFC this Wednesday May 2nd. Kick Off is at 8pm. Newbridge RFC has a strong representation on the squad who have enjoyed victories over County Fingal and County Louth on their way to the final. Support welcome and appreciated for what should be a great match. JD is trying to organise a bus for the match, so get in touch with him if you're interested.

Ladies Beaten in Bowl Final:

The travels of the ladies rugby team are over for this season , they have come from the almost folding in November to contesting an all Ireland Cup final and an All Ireland League Final .

In Waterpark Newbridge met worthy opponents as their team possessed spirit and determination , Newbridge dominated this game from the kick off  had most of the possession and territory. They created many scoring opportunities but the Waterpark defence held out. In injury time Waterpark scored a superb try, and Newbridge were left regretting many missed chances.

Newbridge turned up for this final with the correct attitude , may individuals had good games, the team performance was something for all to be proud of.

NRFC Annual Dinner Dance Update - Update from Valerie Finn.

60 euro each special offer this week only!!!!!!!!

Thanking You,

Valerie

April 19th: Ladies into Bowl Final.

Q. What's the best course of action after falling off a horse?

A. Get back on again straight away.

Only days after being well beaten by a very good Clonmel side in the AIL playoffs, the NRFC Ladies team climbed back up on the proverbial horse, deserved ably  beating St Mary's 19-5 on their own patch, thereby earning a place in the All-Ireland Bowl final competition. Standing between them and more silverware will be league rivals Waterpark. Webmaster did his thing for the Ladies cause, pulling into the St Mary's RFC car park 15 minutes late just as Newbridge touched down to level the scores at 5 points each. The conversion was missed. The rest of the first half was even steven, though Newbridge had to do some stout defending just before halftime to keep Mary's out. The second half was all Newbridge and but for Newbridge's lack of patience and composure in breaking down the Mary's defense and in fairness some great defensive work from Mary's, Newbridge would have had scores on the board sooner. As it was it took a 79th minute touchdown from Niki and an injury time long range try from Julie Doyle to seal a deserved win. Credit too the magnificent pack and scrum half Shona Nolan  (nice punch on their prop Shona!) who did so much to create scoring opportunities and keep Mary's under the kosh. Bowl final kick off in Malahide RFC this Saturday is 1pm. This is their last match, a real chance of silverware for the team and the club. So for God's sake, if you're not up to much on Saturday, get your arse up the M7, the M50  and onto Malahide and support your NRFC team. Lisa and her hard working squad and coaching  staff deserve it.

April 17th: Rugby Fix for the offseason. No rugby in Rosetown for the summer? No rugby on the TV either? No problem! After reading an article in the Sunday Tribune, webmaster has been experimenting with 'widgets' - no, not the ones in the Guinness cans, but website widgets. I've got one and configured it for rugby links. Click on this link to see what I mean. I think they're kinda cool, so if I find any other ones, I may be putting them on the website. Better still, if any of you find suitable, useful ones, send me the link.

April 16th: Ladies beaten in league playoff. The Ladies' plans for playing in AIL1 league competition will have to wait just one more year after defeat by Clonmel yesterday sees them eliminated from the promotional playoff picture. All in NRFC wish Olivia Archbold a speedy recovery after she sustained a broken collar bone late in the match. All's not lost for the Ladies as they play St Mary's in the Bowl semi-final this Thursday 6.30pm at Templeville Road.

Newbridge Ladies playing in the playoff semi-finals for the first time were given a taste of what life in the first division would be like , in Clonmel they met a team of talented individuals who were proficient in all the skills required to compete with the best ladies Teams in the country .

Clonmel won all their League games for the last two seasons and were determined not to slip up , they won 75% of the ball and dominated the breakdown , they scored seven tries in all through flowing back moves and driving mauls , Newbridge as always defended stubbornly and were not found wanting for team spirit .

Newbridge applied significant pressure on the Clonmel line in the 2nd half but to no avail .

The Newbridge pack were forced into changes before the game , Maeve O Grady ( former Captain) played wing forward for the first time and won 50/50 share of possession at the lineout , Karen Dargen Moore played no 2 to the first time and won all her own ball ( no mean feat) .

A season that started poorly has improved steadily , reaching the playoffs is an achievement in itself , Captain Lisa and her band of regular trainers are to be commended .

On Thursday 18:30 next Newbridge play St Mary's in the Bowl Semi-Final. Support welcome.

To all those Div 2 Surfers that check out our Website thank you for a competive League season .

PS Olivia Archbold was treated for a broken Collar Bone , all wish her well and a speedy recovery.

Other news: NRFC 2XV cup conquerors Tullow claimed another Kildare scalp beating Cill Dara 17-9 in the seconds cup semi in Portlaoise yesterday. Tullow will face Portlaoise in the final April 29th. Definitely a good cup season for Portlaoise as their 1XV came away from Forenaughts with a 35-32 win v Naas1XV in the Town Cup QF yesterday. They now play Skerries in the semi in Naas RFC next Sunday. The winners of that will meet Navan who beat LL2 champs Ashbourne 37-24 in the other PTC semi-final also played yesterday.

April 13th: County Kildare March On. Fielding a number of NRFC players, County Kildare beat Fingal in the Pa Dunne Cup last Wednesday in a match played at Cill Dara RFC's Beechpark. Scorers for Co Kildare were tries from Mark Coonan,Johnny Downey & Rory McCann, and a penalty try, with Mark Coonan also adding a penalty and a conversion.

Thanks to Cill Dara's Paddy White for the photo.

April 12th: Ladies Match Report and Photos from last weekend. Apologies for not getting this up sooner (said the bishop to the actress). Laura sent them in on Monday but webmaster too busy tinkering with the new messageboard to notice. Anyhow click the underlined to view the Trinity Match Report and Match Photos.

April 11th: New NRFC messageboard Following up on some feedback I received some weeks ago, I've started to put together a new messageboard. It's quite a step up from what we had. Anyone using a phpBB based open source forum like the Leinster Fans or the Munster Fans forum will be familiar with the format we're now using. Registration will be required one more time. Click Here to access the new messageboard. I'm still ironing out some bugs on it, so be patient. Once registered, click on the 'Test Forum 1' link and start to post new messages or reply to existing messages in there. I will obselete and delete the old message board shortly so please don't use this anymore. I'll update the existing message board links around the site, but I'll probably miss something so e-mail me with comments, corrections or to report problems as you come across them. As with the previous message board, try to keep the heavy and negative stuff out of it. It's not a springboard for railing at people or shortcomings in the club. Thanks again to all who registered and used the old message board. Enjoy the new one and don't take yourself (or anyone else for that matter) too seriously on it.

April 11th: Fred Forster is on the mend. Webmaster is pleased to report that Fred continues to make a full recovery after a minor heart scare last month. Fred is one of NRFC's more vocal, visual and popular alickadoos and despite living on the West Coast in the US, he always manages to make it back to Ireland - and Newbridge RFC - a couple of times a year to support the teams. He's even known to join in on training and is always available for a match. Glad to hear you're getting back to full strength Fred - everyone in Newbridge RFC looking forward to seeing you out in Rosetown very soon. If you want to e-mail Fred your best wishes - click here.

April 10th: A curate's egg of results this Easter. The Ladies season continues, the 2XV competitive season is over. The seconds lost 9-7 to Tullow in Rosetown on Sunday. Despite letting Tullow out to a 9-0 lead and putting in a barnstorming second half performance, our seconds just came up short against what nobody will dispute was a good Tullow side and a match for anyone left in the competition. All's not lost from the weekend however. The Ladies, obviously following the same tactics as the seconds, gave Trinity a 12-0 lead early on before turning on a the barnstorming apparatus and running down the Trinners girls 13-12 in the AIL play-offs. Next up for the Ladies is an away trip next Sunday April 15th to Clonmel, who are undefeated in League competition this season. K.O is 1pm.

College Park , Easter Sunday , sunshine , Newbridge ladies faced Trinity - a side that had done it's homework to apply the rules of the competition and play 13 aside. This suited their style as their 8, 9, 10 , 12 & 13 were particularly strong. Trinity had much the better of the opening half and deservedly went ahead 7-0 .Newbridge broke out of their own half and scored a try through Berni . Trinity went back on the attack were rewarded with a further try 12 -5 at half time was a fair reflection .

The Newbridge team hit a purple patch after the break and played some good rugby. To the fore was captain Lisa Morrisey who led by example and brought the game to Trinity. One flowing move with the forwards providing quick ball resulted in fullback Siobhan scoring a try leaving the score at 12 -10 to Trinity. Game on . Further pressure from Newbridge resulted in a penalty, which Julie converted. Incredibly Newbridge lead 13-12 .

Trinity threw everything they had at Newbridge , but to no avail, as the Newbridge Ladies met the challenge presented to them, with their "never give up" attitude. The final whistle was greeted with relief and ecstasy in equal measures. Captain Lisa and her team continue to enhance the reputation of Newbridge RFC. Newbridge now meet Clonmel.

Clonmel are undefeated in the League this season , and pose a mighty challenge to the Newbridge Team , Clonmel easily defeated Newbridge when they met .

Best of Luck to Lisa and the Team next Sunday. Support welcome and thanks to all who supported the team last Sunday.

Intercounty Rugby:
County Kildare in action this Wednesday April 11th v Fingal at 8pm in Cill Dara RFC. Newbridge players Eddie Southern ,Mick Doran, Rory McCann, Johnnie Downey, Richie Larkin and Dennis O'Callaghan likely to figure for the County team.

Rosetown Gig:
Jinx Lennon gig on Friday 20 april at 9pm Rosetown.

Yet even more E&R: Are there any pigs left alive or hens not clapped out in Kildare? Noel's at it again... more and new E&R for the Newbridge faithful.

April 6th: More photos up on the website. It's taken a while, but I finally got around to putting up a bank of photos on the website. Thanks to all the contributors. The match pics taken by Rik are of particularly high quality, so thanks again for these Rik, I hope others will thank you too. Given I played at sometime or another with most of these bozos, I'm shocked at how well they look. They never seemed to be trying that hard when I was playing. There's definitely some material there for disproving the camera never lies theory. Latest pics are available for viewing on the Latest Photos and NRFC Legends webpages.

E&R double bill!:
As it's definitely the season for eggs, Noel has obliged by rattling off 2 episodes of E&R in 2 weeks. I've grouped them in one bumper helping of E&R. Click Here or go to the Egg & Rashers webpage.

April 2nd: Ladies Team on the double this weekend. Rugby team of the year? Ireland?, New Zealand? Wellington Hurricanes? Lllanelli Scarlets? No - try something a lot closer to home. Congrats to Lisa, Paul, Seanie and all the NRFC Ladies squad for achieving a super set of results this weekend. On Saturday they took the long road to Enniskillen and beat the home side 11-0 to reach the bowl semi-final against St Mary's. The next day they were on the road again, this time down to Nenagh to play a winner take all match to get to the league promotion play-offs and they duly obliged grinding out a 7-5 win against the locals. 2 days, 2 away matches 2 provinces, 2 wins. Match Reports, Bowl SF and play-off match details to follow. A remarkable set of results under very testing circumstances. Hat's off to the Ladies team. In fact hot off the e-mail presses (?!) here's a report from Seanie of the Ladies' weekend adventures.

The Ladies travelled a total of 410 miles for the love of their sport, rugby, the achievements  are tangible they have reached the semi-final of a knockout All Ireland  cup  and St Mary's and Waterpark await them , they have reached the round Robin stage of the League , Armagh , Navan , Enniskillen  , Clonmel , and Waterpark are looking for the title and promotion.

A combination of  , hardwork ,  performance  , good administration , and good leadership was required .

Enniskillen with home advantage did all in their power to stop the Newbridge girls , but a piece of individual brilliance from Nikki Ni Caba gave Newbridge a  5 nil half time lead , The Second half was all Newbridge and Muireann Walsh touched down . The long Journey home was no problem with victory as a balm for aching limbs .

On Sunday Nenagh were waiting in the long grass buoyed by the opportunity to make the playoffs themselves , this was a typical Munster Leinster confrontation , a very well drilled Nenagh pack dominated at Scrum time and had 80 % possession , their bal retention was top class . The defensive effort from the entire Newbridge 15 was incredible and time and time again they made tackles and forced errors from Nenagh , half time 0 - 0 .

The possession that Newbridge did get was under pressure and many knock- ons resulted . The determination of Newbridge Ladies is their biggest asset . They strung a phase of brilliant rugby together with all 15 players handling the ball a try under the post was the result who scored was of no consequence as everyone had contributed , 7- 0 . Nenagh responded immediately 7- 5 . The remainder of the game was tense with Newbridge demonstrating coolness and skill to clear their lines .

The Newbridge Ladies for the 4th season are playing rugby in April at the final stages of the competitioin  they will play a min of 2 games and Max of 5 over the next 4 weeks . There is a core of players that are playing since the first game 4 years ago who maintain steady progress  , their rugby deserves the support of all members .

1XV back on the winning trail. Showing no signs of rustiness after a long lay-off, the 1XV hit the ground running against Swords scoring 2 early converted tries and jumping out to a 14 point lead in the opening ten minutes. The lads took their foot somewhat off the pedal after that, letting Swords back into it, 14-13 at one stage in the second half, before upping it again to pull away and win 33-19. Next up for the 1XV is an away trip to either Boyne in the plate QF. No yellow cards this weekend for either NRFC players or supporters :o)

Seconds Cup QF:
Next Sunday (April 8th) sees the 2XV play Tullow in the Provincial Seconds Cup quarter finals in Rosetown. k.o is 3pm. Support needed and always appreciated by the lads.

March 27th: Newbridge RFC Annual Dinner Dance:  Is on Friday 4th May in the Standhouse Hotel. Drinks reception at 7pm. Dinner at 8pm. Music 'til very late and loads of spot prizes. Black tie event. Tickets €60 each. Book now to avoid disappointment. Contact Valerie Finn (087) 6731043 for more details. Tickets also available for purchase from Fiona Nugent at the clubhouse shop, open every Friday 6 - 7.15pm.

March 25th: Ladies march on, Thirds out of the Anderson Cup: The Ladies team produced their best performance of the season  (better than Waterpark in the Green Road IMHO) putting 31 points to no reply up against a big Clanwilliam team. Ladies Match Report. The result keeps the league playoff ambitions in the melting pot and along with the remaining league games the bowl QF, there's plenty of big rugby games to be played by the Ladies team before this season is finished. In fact it's an extremely busy weekend for the Ladies. On Saturday they will travel to either Enniskillen to play the Bowl QF or play Youghal at home in the league AND on Sunday they travel to Nenagh to fulfil the league fixture.

Unfortunately the Thirds couldn't follow the Ladies example and went down 19-18 to Tullow in the Anderson Cup. Once again, a high quality high tempo match. We had a number of chances to win it at the death unfortunately we couldn't get that vital score.

Newbridge had a number of personnel yellow carded during the game. Some on the field and some not on the field. Which was interesting, but not Goode news for some.... see picture across for a hint.  Anyone got a caption to capture the moment??? Better news - can be confirmed by someone? - is that the 3XV season is not over yet as they are in the Spiers Cup final. Match date and location TBC.

NRFC's youngest member: Congrats to Frank and Steph Holland on the birth of their baby boy Darragh last week. As you can see, Frank has set down an early marker as to what sport and to which county Darragh is to pledge allegiance to. Frank says he's a long fellow and will slot in well in the second row. Webmaster's advice to Darragh is to stay out of the any position numbered 1-5. Those are for nasty boys and lunatics. With his father's long legs and fiery Munster temperament and mother's intelligence, Darragh could go a long way... further than Kildangan GAA I hope Frank.

October 10th: League matches aplenty this weekend. Newbridge teams are shaping up nicely for what is most likely to be the busiest weekend of adult rugby in some time at Newbridge RFC. 1XV and 2XV teams start their league campaigns at home to Roscrea at Rosetown on Sunday. The Ladies league fixture takes them to Youghal for the first time. The U20s start their J.P Flanagan campaign away to Naas on Sunday and well done to Dara O'Maitiu for getting us a place in the J4 blitz taking place on Sunday at Monkstown RFC where NRFC will be pitted against Monkstown, Parkmore, Tallaght and Unidare. It certainly says something about the popularity of rugby in the Newbridge area where we have a bursting minis and youths section and can field 4 adult teams and an under 20's team all on the same day. Well done to players, coaches and families - it's a good time to be in Rosetown. Webmaster wishes all NRFC teams happy hunting and good rugby this weekend. Also there are new photos posted on the Latest Photos webpage.

J4 Blitz at Monkstown RFC this Sunday. Players needed:
Dara has texted a bunch of you but has received few replies for the J4 blitz this weekend. If you have received a text, please reply to Dara ASAP. If he's missed you or you're new to the area and fancy a run out this weekend, contact Dara at  087-2846255 or e-mail: domaitiu@vodafone.ie  He'll be glad to hear from you and will find a spot for you on the team.

October 4th: New Eggs and Rashers: New E&R from Noel. Photos of 2XV v Portlaoise and Ladies v Clonmel will be available shortly (end of week). Ladies match report v Clonmel also now available.

October 2nd: Firsts lose, seconds win. The 1XV lost 17-10 in the last of the Hosie Cup rounds played in Portarlington yesterday. With a low key start, they found themselves spending way too much time in their own half for the 1st 30 min. 12-Nil down at half time really wasn't a bad result. Fair dues to Rory and the lads, they got their game together in the 2nd half and but for some fine defence by Port, they would have scored often and early in the 2nd half. A penalty by Matt Wilson, was followed soon after by Matt with a conversion for a mauled over pack try. Don't know who scored it - but the pack should take the credit, leaving it at 12-10 with 5 min to go. A couple of mistakes from some v tired bodies let Port in in the last minute for an unconverted try in the corner. Webmaster's man of the match was Patrick Tucker. Tuck has a huge match, supporting the runner and tackling anything that moved above grass. He showed a big appetite for carrying the ball and making the hard yards usually taking 2 or 3 Port defenders to ground with him. More of the same from the rest of ye lads and we'll have a right good league campaign. The seconds confirmed their place in the Lalor Cup final (anyone know against whom?) with a hard earned 11-5 win over Port's 2XV. Next up for the lads is the league opener on Sunday week (Oct 14) when Roscrea come to Rosetown.

The Ladies lost 37-03 to Clonmel in their league opener in Rosetown on Sunday. Match Report.

The league started yesterday for most LL Division 1 and Division 3 teams. A quick search on the internet revealed the following results from LL1 and LL3. A big away win for Cill Dara - well done Chris and the lads. Not sure if the Garda result is a typo, if not... wow!

Sept 27th: Ladies XV League Opener:   The Ladies XV open their 2006/07 league campaign this weekend v Clonmel. It's a tough ask for the girls against the strongest team in the division last season. Newbridge have lost a number of players from the last couple of seasons and they have been replaced with a combination of new and experienced players. Support always vital for league matches - none more so than for the girls this weekend. It's the only adult match in Rosetown this weekend, so if you can, please come out as usual and support the Newbridge RFC teams.  Kick off is 12.30pm on Sunday.

New Eggs and Rashers now available for viewing at the E&R link on the lefty hand side of this page.

Sept 26th: The Indestructable Fred Forster:  An extract from an e-mail sent from Fred earlier this week to a golden oldies tournament organiser indicating his unavailability to participate. E-mail is titled 'Freds Left Knee ... Good news/bad news'

The San Jose Silverhawks over 40's touring New Zealand had invited me to play against North Shore on Sept 30 whose team has several old All Blacks

In July ,I was advised that the there was some floating debris in my left knee that be taken care of any time. I expected recovery (be able to play rugby) in about 4 weeks so I decided to have the operation on August 14 so I would have plenty of time to recover for the Silverhawks game against North Shore on Sept 30.

This has turned out to be a bad decision. 6weeks after the operation and my knee is not recovered, I have some difficulty walking , and can not do my usual 10 sec 100 yard sprints. This may take a few months.

I will not be able to play in Auckland on September 30. I will make the trip and suit up for the game and  try to scare the opposition with a one- legged HAKA and will try to out drink and out sing them at the after game party. I may even recite Eskimo Nell..

I do expect to be at peak shape for the World cup in France in 2007 if I am selected.

Sept 25: Gravity and the way she might look at you The 1XV came back to earth with a bang yesterday after they were well beaten 43-10 by a slick and sharp Portlaoise side in the Hosie cup in Rosetown yesterday.

The 2XV left it late to beat Portlaoise 2XV 10-6 in the Lalor cup match.  Hosie & Lalor match reports.

Next up for the lads is Portarlington (away) in the Hosie and Lalor cup ties next Sunday.

The Ladies rugby season is up and running too. They travelled for a friendly to 1st Divsion side Boyne and gave a very good account of themselves scoring 2 tries in a 17-10 loss to Boyne. Their league competition gets underway next weekend when they play Clonmel next Sunday Oct 1st at Rosetown.

Table Quiz: A table quiz is on in Rosetown next Friday night (Sept 29) 8.30pm.  Quizmaster for the night is Noel Heavey of Eggs & Rashers fame. Funds raised are for player infrastructural resources (a stereo sound system for the senior teams). Money and spot prizes to be won on the night. €40 for a table of 4. Tables will also be made up on the night. This was great craic last time out and another mighty night in Rosetown is guaranteed, so spread the word, and see you in Rosetown on Friday night. The bar will be open from 8pm.

Sept 20: Eggs and Rashers webpage now active: What do Kevin Myers, Johnny Giles, Trevor Brennan, The Pope and Noel Heavey have in common? Nothing? Wrong! They all have their own editorial column in newspapers or websites to publish their distinguished views on a variety of subjects. As of today, Eggs and Rashers webpage is now active. Click on the Eggs & Rashers link on the left of the screen to access. The good news is all previous E&Rs will be available here too! No pressure Noel, but a waiting public expects!

* Saturday match

Sept 19: Newbridge Mens teams win opening rounds of Hosie and Lalor Cups, U20s win season opener:
A great weekend for the club with wins for the 1XV, 2XV and U20s on Saturday. The 1XV and 2XV served  up some great rugby on the way to a 31-30 (1XV match report) and 45-05 (2XV match report) win over local  rivals Cill Dara. See other places on the website for more on this (errr, there's plenty on the messageboard).  Rik has also sent on some great pics and these can be seen on the Latest Photos section (see link on left hand side of the screen). Great support for the teams and I'll include Cill Dara supporters in that observation. I also agree with some of the sentiments on the messageboard that they (players and supporters) are well able to take it on the chin when they lose. Good luck to them and all Kildare rugby teams this season.

The U20s proved they have bags of potential by overcoming the self-imposed handicap of being at a debs the night before (well some of them anyway) on their way  to a win over Clondalkin on Saturday (score? report?)

Paul Archbold - apologies - didn't get your e-mail in time about the Ladies playing in the tourney at the weekend, how'd it go?

A mixed sporting weekend for the Webmaster. The joy of seeing the lads beat Cill Dara on Saturday was tempered somewhat by the news on the radio on the way home that his beloved Leeds United lost again and are now in the relegation zone of the Coca Cola Championship (it's really division 2 to me & the die hards)

.
Worse was to follow in Johnson's on Sunday when I had to witness my even more beloved Mayo getting pounded by the Kerry juggernaut. Fair dues to Morgan Foley. He could have crowed just a little just to rub it in (I know I would have), but he maintained a very dignified stance on the whole thing... maybe those pints bought his silence.....

Anyhow next  up for the lads is Portlaoise in the next round of the Hosie and the Lalor cups. This Sunday Sept 24th k.o is 1:30pm for the 2XV and 3pm for the 1XV. Support counted last Saturday and will count again on Sunday. Ryder Cup coverage on in the clubhouse - you've no excuse!

Sept 19: Hosie and Lalor Cups filled with Eggs and Rashers:

Well...well…well…like all things you look forward to … Saturday’s date with Cill Dara duly arrived, in the end whooshing in on top of us…...even with it’s confusing 5 o clock back to 3 o clock and the Lalor cup 3pm match back to 1 ….and now Cass ringing up looking for pots for rice….sun splitting the rocks- this will suit Assiz- but will he get enough ball?…..and will he get big marauding garrujahs coming through on top of him?…..but first of all Noel has a 1 o clock christening in Ballybrack (….welcome Aoibhe !… your ceremony was very moving and involving …but God its 2pm…quick goodbyes …out the door…into car …..pedal to the metal …thanks be to God and EU money for the M50 but have to watch the speedo…. don’t want any more official Garda notices coming through the letterbox !!)
• 3.07pm…. in the gate ….The black and yellows are defending…..no parking spaces …slot her in behind the prefabs….Birch behind the goals looking concerned….Morgan breaking out ….wham….we look comfortable enough…..but they look more comfortable…..and now they are rolling a maul slowly towards our line….slowly but surly ….and now they are in …. sh#* ….yer man misses the conversion 5-0….not too bad says I ,then Tom Poole informs me it is 11-0-,they had kicked 2 penalties as I was coming at speed out by KIlbelin!….sh#, sh~*, sh#* !!!
• The hill in Rosetown is not really a hill, but it is ,when you are a Newbridge forward playing up it and the score 0-11 against a pack that last year gave us such a severe trimming….but to our credit with Morgan, Rory and Liam making huge hits…. we make hard yards up the hill and for 20 mins we give as good as we are getting…..Colly is lording the lineouts ……and our scrum is solid - rock solid ……our all new backline is not working going forward- the passes are not going to hand but by god when they try to run it we smother them and drive them back…..and then out of the blue Matt Wilson spots the gap…..shimmies …. he is over without a hand coming near him ….converts as well 7-11…. game on !
• But then the old dogs of Cill Dara pull their favourite stunt … penalty…touch … 5m out ….they drive ….we hold them out…desperate stuff…. But they are so good at scoring in this type of situation …in the end I think it is Chris Moore who grounds it….. 7-16 …convert missed. Half time … bruising tough 44 mins.Team talk and it is here that the match is won ….Birch is livid … and so so pumped up …he sees that we can win …and demands that we step it up and give a performance ….time to get off the pot boys ………. !
• The mind is so important ….you can see our little Newbridge boys are different …. Different mindset….different body language….but the Cill Dara forwards are some set of forwards and they don’t look like they are in knee bending mode …..the clashes are now truly ferocious ….penalty to the Bridge …..Matty splices the posts 10-16 and from the kick off I think it is Assiz who kicks it…. lashing it down ….Willy Ryan ( our winger from last years 20’s) hares down after it …. into the jaws of the lion and does something he is not entitled to do…takes the ball from 2 or 3 Cill Dara lads on his own ….scores the try…5m or so from the left touchline….Matty ….low trajectory or what…. converts….in the space of 2 mins we have scored twice and are leading 17-16 ….no hosedown today for Cill Dara….
• The game is now ratcheted up several notches …..raging bulls with no small amount of skill as 2 exemplary teams go at it hammer and tongs…..up and down the pitch…..more down than up …and now our backs are spinning it out wide ….Dave Watkins ball in hand runs straight and true and how he manages to get through a solid wall and ground the ball for our 3rd try I’ll never know- but he does….. conversion eile aris 24-16 ….happy day in Rosetown ….sofar….but now here comes Cill Dara ….5 mins solid pressure …breakthrough try against us ….conversion missed again….24-21….we win a penalty…..kick…flags up….27-21….17 mins to go….but they are playing like a good team does when things are not going well…..sticking together like leeches …..up the hill they come …again
• And then we pull what I think is our masterstroke …..Tucker gets the call and ambles on for Arthur who has held his own all day in a very hot kitchen ….I wonder what goes through the Cill Dara prop’s head when,- on the edge of exhaustion ,he looks up and finds 17 stones of focused muscle cominatcha ….. still they are pressing us…….spinning it inside our half….but now Rory O Connor -back from missing a whole season on a career imperative in New York….intercepts and stttrreeaakksss in under the posts…… alacrity or what …32- 24 (I get a flashback ….. meeting Rory –the prodigal son returning-outside the RDS last jan as we both desperately try to scrounge a ticket for the sell out Leinster / Munster match ….. sensing a momentous clash and result I would have given a lot to get into that match….. no joy …. but just as me and Rory give up and decide to repair to the pub…..I make eye contact with a Munster head who is holding up what is a ticket,,,, which Rory gratefully takes from my unbelieving grasp and walks on in ….)
• Time up but the ref has decided to play 2 hours injury time!!….and now here come Cill Dara…… Penalty….one trick pony here we go again….but he kicks it dead…..”not on yer nanny” sez the Cill Dara touch judge …. And 100 true blues howl ……line out on the line …..sweet mother of God….why is this happening ?….throw in…. they win it ….maul it…..drive for the line ….we hold the f#~*^~# out…..but they hold and bide…and press again ….and they get it down….and this time yer man splits the posts after the ref orders his missed conversion retaken because someone made noises as we charged the kick….32- 31….surly to God…the unthinkable cannot happen….and then after 1 and a half hours injury time played ….he blows it up…..hallehluhiah …a dragon slain!….a monkey off our back !!
PS THOUGHTS….junior community rugby has served up this treasure of a match …junior community rugby ,not even an afterthought when the big deal scribes extol the issues of the 3 tiered IRFU setup-Ireland, Provinces…and the AIL league … the unfortunate knee ligament injury to Leroy whose love of the Bridge and the vibe has brought him 12,000 miles back to us ….as tough a match as you would wish to see no quarter asked for ….none given …but no rancour…at the end of the day 67 or so young men gave their all for the love and glory of their clubs…(.I missed the seconds game but 50 points to 5 for the Bridge says a lot ….I will return to this another day) ….Sheldon crossed the divide during the break and our first match up we had to face him ….but no bitterness …he tried his living best to beat us …but “not tonight Josephine” The club house is rocking and on the telly its Leinster versus Cardiff …. Jamie H and yes its Birch still pumped up giving the Cardiff guys loads…. some man for one man is our man Birch…and finally what about the Cass and his loaves and fishes trick ….60 people fed and well fed for this side of €100…..legend !!

Sept 13: 1XV and 2XV matches are on SATURDAY: Forget what you read in the papers, you'll always get the best info here at www.newbridgerugby.com (of course you all know that already). Contrary to newspaper reports, the 1XV and 2XV matches v Cill Dara are on this Saturday at 1:30pm (2XV) and 3pm (1XV) in Rosetown. All support very welcome and appreciated so come out to Rosetown this weekend and support your NRFC teams. Scoop rang me in the middle of the night and begged me to include this amended piece below.

There’s an enticing fixture this Saturday at Rosetown when two local rivals Newbridge and Cill Dara meet in the Hosie Cup. It will be the first competitive game of the season for Newbridge whereas Cill Dara already put down their marker with a resounding victory over Portlaoise. It will be a tough call for Newbridge to get one over on the Division 1 side and they will have to do it without their injured captain Rory McCann. So far Newbridge have had a run out against a Carlow squad in which they did well, but in terms of a genuine test this Sunday will be the real thing. Last Sunday Mick Doran took a second XV squad to Athboy where they notched up a 27-14 win against the Meath men. Outhalf Bryan Kennedy was on form with a
hat-trick of tries and Rory O’Connor added two conversions. Kevin Coughlan kicked over a drop goal and prop Eddie Southern also added a try. After last season’s unbeaten league run skipper Mick Doran will be looking for a good start in the Lalor Cup to keep up the winning ways.

Sept 11: 2XV season opens with a win: Mick Doran's seconds hit the ground running with a 27-17 win away to Athboy in their first game of the season. Brian Kennedy served Eddie O'Sullivan early notice of his intention to challenge ROG at outhalf for next year's world cup with a hat trick of tries. Eddie 'Bull' Southern also notched up a TD for the front row faithful (does that count as 2?) Rory O'Connor converted 2 of the tries and Kevin Coughlan showed us all he doesn't just drop passes in matches by dropping a goal for his side.  Next up for the 1XVand 2XV is Cill Dara on Saturday in Rosetown.

Ladies Player Profiles: Are now also being put up on the website. Not as many mugshots as the lads just yet, but that will be addressed in time. Ladies player profiles can be accessed through the Ladies Rugby Team webpage. Both men and ladies players who have not filled in their information on the sheets are encouraged to do so. Rory McCann, Mick Doran and Valerie Finn have the profile sheets so chase them down. Webmaster will organise another mugshot photoshoot shorthly... U20s I haven't forgotten you either, I'll sort something out shortly.

Sept 5th: Hosie and Lalor Cup matches v Cill Dara: These matches will now be played on Saturday Sept 16th at Rosetown - not Sunday Sept 17th as originally stated. k.o for the Lalor match is 3pm, the Hosie match k.o is 5pm. Apologies for the confusion. Mayo result v Kerry on the Sunday is unaffected by this. Up Mayo! Also you'll notice the 'Links' button on the left of the screen has been activated and contains rugby and local related links. E-mail me if you'd like to see additional rugby or local links included here.

Sept 4th: Newbridge lose in Clontarf - a last minute fixture change saw a makeshift Newbridge team travel to Clontarf last Friday evening. Didn't get a scoreline from the lads but sounds like Clontarf were good for their win. In fact it's a result in itself that the lads managed to finish work, make it up the N7, past Newlands Cross and the Mad Cow Roundabout and through the M50 tollbridge in time for a 7.30 kick off on a Friday evening. Certainly we've got our feet back on the ground again after the Carlow result and no harm too 'cos next up for the 1XV and 2XV teams is Cill Dara on Saturday  week for the opening round of the Hosie and Lalor cup ties. Bragging rites have gone to Cill Dara for the last few seasons but webmaster is confident we can pull a 'Mayo' on them and upset the odds. Speaking of which I don't think anyone was in doubt who webmaster was cheering for in the Mayo v Dublin match shown in the clubhouse after the Carlow match (he is after all from Castlebar). If I'm not at the Cill Dara match, you'll know where I'll be... though fair dues to Morgan Foley who's indicated he'd rather play for Newbridge v Cill Dara than go to Croker and watch his native Kerry fail valiantly to Mayo.

Webmaster was also shocked to find out from Morgan that they can get d'internet in Killorglin and Morgan's mother is a regular visitor to www.newbridgerugby.com. Josephine, no need to worry, webmaster can confirm he's secured a regular supply of hairy bacon and that he's definitely not wasting away. We've finally begun to understand the Kerry dialect a little better now so we're able to hold a decent conversation with him without needing markers and sketch pads :o) We're all looking forward to seeing you up in Newbridge soon.

Aug 31st: Saturday match v Asbourne cancelled. Please note the 1XV match v Ashbourne on Saturday is cancelled (not us!) Next 1XV match Friday Sept 1st  away v Clontarf (Castle Ave) k.o 7.30pm.

Aug 29th: 1XV get season off to a winning start. Well the season is officially underway after the 1st match of the season ended in victory against Carlow J1s. In a rerun of the very first match Newbridge played 10 years ago this weekend v Carlow ( and also won!), Newbridge had to subdue a very determined Carlow team before running out 35-14 winners.

1996 NRFC 1st 1XV Team Reunion:

Webmaster and a lot of the original team from 10 years ago enjoyed an excellent meal (and drinkies!) and speeches (Pearse,- - I'd hate to hear one of your long speeches!), courtesy of the club before rolling out of the clubhouse to watch our current J1s
take on Carlow J1s. On behalf of Martin Donnelly and his team, thanks again to all who helped organise a wholly enjoyable and successful function. Indeed in the words of one of the wags, we all look forward to the 10 year Hosie Cup winning
commemorative function for that team next January :o) One thing that struck Webmaster last Sunday was the quality of the main pitch. It's the best I've ever seen it and without doubt one of the best playing surfaces in the province. So hats off to
Super and JD and others! for all the work they've put into the pitches over the years. It would be a shame for the main pitch to take an unnecessary beating so I'd encourage all coaches and players to respect the main pitch for what it is - a pitch for important club matches - and to keep tip, training and warm ups off the main pitch area.

U20 Training starts next Friday September 1st at 8pm in Rosetown. Training will be taken by our new U20s coach - rising Leinster and Ireland star Jamie Heaslip.

Men's Player Profiles have started to be put up on the website. Plenty of players profiles yet to be completed by the players themselves, but we got off to a good start last weekend. Team captains Rory, Mick and Lisa have the player profile questionaires for you to fill out so be sure to ask them for a copy and return it to them ASAP. Emphasis is on light heartedness and good humour so don't take yourselves too seriously when filling them out. Webmaster will be along shortly with his trusty camera to take your mugshot. U20s - don't worry - I'll get to you too very shortly. A couple of things I noticed when entering the data into the PC for the current crop of profiles - the younger players quote their weight in kilos, the older heads in stones and pounds - with the exception of 1 profile, everyone quoted their height in feet and inches, so the metric system has some way to go yet before it takes over the rugby stats department. (Anyone still playing who remembers a try only being 4 points and wingers used to throw in the lineouts? sigh!) The second thing that struck me was the feeling that some players may have been telling porkies about their height or weight (or both) - esp those burds from numbers 10-15. Check out the Mens Player Profiles to see what I mean... Ladies and U20 player profiles to be added soon - actually as soon as I get a decent number of completed questionnaires so it's up to you really...

August 16th: Men's Training now switched to Rosetown: Men's and U20s Training has now switched back to the Rosetown grounds.

Membership due: Note to all  - membership is now due. Contact your team captain, Colin Goode, John Dardis Jnr. or Ger Barry for more details or ideally with the readies.

Men's and Ladies provisional fixtures now available. Ladies and Men's teams fixtures now available on their respective webpages - some fixtures subject to change, so check back regularly during the season to get the latest fixture table. Links to the match reports will also be available from these tables.

Got a note in your head? Webmaster has started off the song book webpage and has added the lyrics to a couple of songs deemed suitable for rugby types. Click Here to go to the NRFC songbook.  Mams and Dads don't worry, they're not of the blue kind. I've heard all these out in Rosetown at some stage of the day or night in the last couple of seasons. In fact I vaguely remember getting thrown out of Swifts one night for refusing to stop singing one of these.

Got anymore you want to share with the club? webmaster is listening... I'm sure Noel H will add a couple to the collection....

Firsts In Action This Weekend. Next Sunday sees a welcome return to action for the 1XV with a Towns Plate match in Rosetown v Swords (used to be ALSAA). k.o is 3pm.

Website and latest photos.
Upon pain of death, webmaster promises to upload the pile match photos and social event photos sent on to him by Rik, Dave, Niall, Midge and others...by the end of the week. No excuses, I've just been lazy when it comes to the photos. Anyway check back to the latest photos and Legends webpages later this week. Loads of photos appearing there in the next couple of days.

Other news:
Cill Dara, NRFC's conquerors in the Towns Cup thsi year, had their Towns Cup ambitions put on hold for at least another season yesterday when being beaten at home by Skerries. Naas took a huge step to regaining senior rugby status with an important 24-13 win away to Crosshaven in the AIL round robin qualifiers on Saturday. A win against Armagh next Saturday in Forenaughts will be them all but promoted to AIL 3.Towns Cup R2: Portlaoise 27-0 Kilkenny. Newbridge RFC Website Stats: A quick update on our website traffic. Since sneakily installing a hidden website hit counter on the homepage back in January, webmaster has been monitoring hits on the homepage. The good news is that since January, we've been getting on average about 950 hits a week on the homepage. In the last 7 days, we've had 398 different visitors. The messageboard has now over 170 registered users - though you wouldn't think it based on the lack of activity there in the last week (we need to play Cill Dara more often Groundhog). The website is due an overhaul in the off-season so please e-mail webmaster@newbridgerugby.com with suggestions for format changes, suggestions for or additions to the website for next season. No unreasonable suggestion will be refused. Better still buy him a beer and it's almost sure to be included.

March 14th: NRFC Baby Boom Continues:  Congrats to new parents Dave McNamara and Angela.  Baby Kieran weighing 8lb 4oz arrived this morning.

3XV Latest News:

The result from the 3XV game last Sunday was 11 - 10 to Portlaoise, with Tom Berney scoring a breakaway try and Eric Price getting a conversion and penalty (by conventional means). The game was the classic encounter of a big well drilled Portlaoise pack rucking and mauling for scores and Newbridge with a lighter pack using their backs to get scores.

March 12th. 2XV pass cup test. Newbridge are into the next round of the seconds cup after a tough 10-3 win over Ashbourne in a match played yesterday in Newbridge College. A try by evergreen Andy Davis and a conversion and penalty by Mackie's trusty boot saw Newbridge into the next round where the lads will play New Ross next Sunday March 18th, probably away. Congrats to the Ladies team who had a massive 20-05 win on the road yesterday away to Clanwilliam. Special mention goes to captain Lisa Morrissey for getting a strong squad of 17 players down to Tipperary. There's still an outside chance of a playoff spot with remaining home games v Youghal and Clanwilliam over the next couple of weekends, so make sure you get out and give them your support. Actually the Leinster Branch have an new rather elegant website for viewing results and upcoming fixtures. Ladies, you should lobby them to get the Ladies fixtures up their too. Go to http://www.sportsmanager.ie/t2.php?countyid=69&sportid=5&club_id=&defaultpag  to see more.

March 8th: Rosetown Pitches Update: Please note that following recent weather conditions and the cutting up of the pitches at Rosetown, no matches should take place in Rosetown this weekend. The 2nds are moving to the college on Sunday with a 3pm KO. If any other matches are scheduled for Rosetown please reschedule.

All remaining home matches for the season will need to be firstly discussed with the grounds committee, Mick O'Donnell & John Dardis.

Thank you all for your support on this matter

Colin Goode

March 6th: Lightning strikes 3 times in the one place. A large crowd turned up in Rosetown last Sunday to see if they would do it again and sure enough, Gerry and Dara's 3XV obliged. Trailing 8-0 with 5 minutes to go, they scored 2 tries - the second try in the last minute after a 40 yard rolling maul to win the match 12-8. Eric's conversion for the second try will live in my memory 'til the day I die. What happened? Well turn up for the next thirds match and I'll tell you. Getting last gasp winners is now the speciality of the team. Once again the perfect combination of youth and experience, brains and brawn is serving this team well. Definitely the most entertaining NRFC team at the moment by a country mile.

Ladies match abandoned:
The Ladies cup match v Enniskillen was abandoned after 15 minutes last Sunday. A bad leg injury to one of the Enniskillen players was attributed to the state of the pitch by the ref and he called the game off at that point. Disappointing for all concerned, especially as it was a very entertaining match with no shortage of big hits and good ball carries being shown by the Newbridge players.

More new NRFC members:
Congrats to Dara and Eileen O'Maitiu and family on their recent new arrival, baby Roisin. This goes someway to explaining why we haven't heard Dara's dulcet tones from the sideline for the Thirds matches lately. With 3 O'Maitiu girls now on the NRFC books, the Ladies team prospects of major silverware are looking rosier by the day....

The Bull has been tamed - well notice has been served of taming...
Congrats also go to 1XV prop Eddie (Bull) Southern and LadiesXV hooker Valerie Finn who announced their engagement at the weekend. To celebrate, they're having an engagement party this Friday March 9th in Johnson's starting at 8 o'clock.

Seconds Cup this weekend:
The opening round of the seconds PTC this weekend sees NRFC 2XV host Ashbourne 2XV this Sunday March 11 at Rosetown. Kick off is 3pm. The seconds were unluckly not to win their league again this year, but all bets are off in the cup and Ashbourne 2XV will arrive keen to seek revenge for their league loss to Newbridge a couple of weeks ago. A very good cup tie on the cards here, so please come out and support the lads.

Non-rugby related inmportant issues.
Webmaster reminding all members young and old that Sunday March 18th  is mothers day. Don't forget the date, but forget the usual pressies of flowers and chocolates and buy her something she'll treasure for years - NRFC gear - available for purchase every Friday evening after underage training.

NRFC making cahnges - JD looking for ideas
I've taken his post from the message board and it's below - some good ideas being generated on the replies. Contact JD directly or reply to him on the messageboard with your ideas.

Dudes and Dudettes!! We need to start thinkin about next season. In fact myself and goodie have been thinkin about next season for a few months now.

1. Things are obviously happening in putting together the various set ups for next year and one issue i want you to consider is the executive committee. We need more young enthusiastic people who have a passion for the club and know whats going on. Its not good enough to opt out of the executive. So get your thinkin hats on and talk to me.

2. im looking for your ideas on how we can improve. eg. manners had an idea on membership and paying for your squad jersey for the season, another person had an idea on doing an exchange programme with a kiwi team for some of our younger players. how can we make that leap that will bring us to div 1. on and off the field we're getting there but we need more hands on deck.

3. how are we going to change the ticket system. the current system is the fairest of one each, but the effort on my part is not sustainable. its going to be prepay from the start of the season next year. anyone any good experiences of this elsewhere/ come on people think and help me out, i want to see some changes or the puppy dog gets it.

Feb 28th: More NRFC teams in action this week. 2XV play Cill Dara in a friendly this Thursday 8pm at Cill Dara RFC. Ladies XV play AIL1 side Enniskillen in the All-Ireland cup this Sunday, 2pm at Rosetown. There's more to rugby than Ireland, Leinster and the NRFC 1XV so please come out and support the Newbridge teams this week.

Feb 26th: 2 Games, Different Result, Same Conclusion. A fine weekend's rugby was enjoyed by the rugby fraternity in the Newbridge-Cill Dara area over the last few days. After seeing the NRFC 1XV put in a great performance against a fine Cill Dara team (1XV Match Report) and Ireland beat the living lard out of England, I came away with the same conclusion from both games i.e If Ireland had played like that v France and Newbridge played like that in the league (all or at least most of the time), then we'd be well on the way for the grand slam and NRFC would be in LL1 next season. If only.... Still kudos go to both teams and supporters on Friday night for making it a great match. This is how I remember the Towns Cup used to be and should always be like. 2 teams going at it nose to nose, supported well by 2 large sets of loud supporters. Best of luck in the next round Groundhog etal. You'll always be welcome back to the messageboard for banter and frank exchange of opinion. Best wishes for a speedy recovery also go to Chris Moore who came off in the first half with a nasty looking knee injury. While Chris won't ever win a popularity contest in Rosetown, he certainly adds spice and colour to the occasion when the teams meet. Nobody likes to see players pick up these type of injuries so we look forward to seeing you back in Cill Dara colours soon Chris.

New E&R:
Noel (like all the national newspapers) has written a commemorative E&R  piece in lieu of the historical weekend just passed.

HoudiniXV:
The 3XV relied on their OAPs one more time with a last play of the game try and conversion to draw 20 all with Portlaoise in the Spiers yesterday. 3XV Match Report. A sprinkling of youth and 'experience' combined well in a fast paced encounter. Sticking the pace comfortably was Martin 'best looking prop in Ireland' Donnelly. Nice to see you back Murty, we'll have a fantastic vets team next year, under your captaincy naturally. The Ladies made the long trip to County Cork yesterday but unfortunately came away with a 24-10 loss down there.

Legends Night:
Coverage continues unabated in the national press all last week. Thanks to all who have sent me photos. I'll be updating the website with the pics later this week.

Feb 20th Legends night in the media: Laura Coates asks me to remind you to pick up a copy of your free, fantastic (TM) Kildare Post next Wednesday. Full page of exclusive shots and report from the Legends night...

U18 Player Profiles: The saga continues. The photos of the lads are in a format that's not useful for website publishing and viewing (it looks rubbish). Noel has been contacted and the originals should be winging their way to webmaster shortly.

New Eggs and Rashers now available at the usual link....

Feb 19th: A heavy landing near Dublin Airport. Severe turbulence was encountered by the 1XV close to Dublin Airport as they came back to earth with a bump losing 33-0 to newly crowned division 2 champs Ashbourne yesterday. Hardly ideal preparation for the Town's Cup match v Cill Dara next Friday night 8pm k.o but as I've been pedalling out for years, league is league but cup is cup. A big improvement is needed - and expected - for next Friday lads.

If for whatever reason you find yourself short on motivation especially when the fireworks are going off all around you next Friday, let me tell you what happened to one of our own last Wednesday in Cill Dara. You're all well aware that the 3XV 'sneaked it' with the last play of the game in the Spiers Cup tie. What you mightn't be aware of is the cheapshot Shane McCorley took earlier in the match from one of the Cill Dara players. Shane was hit very late and speared into the ground after he had passed the ball. He has broken ribs and has (quite smartly in my view) decided to call it a day. Anyone who knows Shane and his family know they are salt of the earth club people. His father was still clearly upset telling me about the incident last Friday at the Legends night. Here's the bit for me that's pure Shane: Despite taking the knock to the ribs, he played on for a good 30 min before the pain was too much and he had to come off. He was still one of of better players on the pitch during this period. If you lads show half the level of grit, heart and skill that Shane showed last Wednesday night, you'll be in the next round, so get out there and play your socks off lads. Shane McCorley deserves it.

Legends Night - winner alright.
A super night was had by one and all last Friday in the Killashee House Hotel. A huge turnout by the 1982 team, coaching staff and their partners was reciprocated by the best turnout yet at the legends - over 280 people it was rumoured - it looked more to me! Everyone in flying form all night. Thanks to all for making it a great night. A special word of thanks to Robert Mehigan, Ger Barry and most especially NRFC Club Chairman Niall Browne for making it happen. Lots of photos taken, so webmaster expecting his e-mail to be full of suitable photos for the website this week. Webmaster too busy to take photos. I was having too much fun winding up Trevor Ringland and David Irwin about the 'Trevor Brennan Incident' in Toulouse.....

Feb 14th: Allez Les Bleus, The French Connection, A feeling of deja vue and all that. Lightning struck twice last night for Ireland and Cill Dara supporters. Just as they witnessed the pain and disappointment of seeing the Irish team lose to a last minute try by France, they had to do it all over again last night when the NRFC 3XV scored a try with the last play of the game AND converted the sideline conversion to beat Cill Dara 12-11 in the Spiers Cup in Beechpark last night. Huge entertainment for a fair sized crowd, the match was played a fair old clip with big hits and good rugby played by both sides. We even had a power cut about 15min from the end. With time up, evergreen Andy Davis crashed over in the corner to make the score 11-10 to Cill Dara. Don't have his name (Scoop/ Dara - help me out here) but a super kick from the sideline meant the ball was only ever going straight between the posts. Full time. Cue celebrations from NRFC supporters and players - apart from one Pearse McCorley who was frantically trying to get the players back to the half way line and shouting at them to concentrate. Pearse, if you'd been concentrating yourself you'd have realised the match was over! :o) Anyhow a great lift after the result in Croker. Which leaves the questions:

Q What do you call a bunch of parrots?
A. A company of parrots

Q. What do you call a bunch of sick parrots?
A. Cill Dara RFC

Roll on the Towns Cup!

p.s U-18 player profiles will be up tomorrow.

Feb 12th: Allez les Blues. Well that was some kick in the family jewels we got yesterday. Not even a dozen pints of Heineken and Scoop's charming company post match could dull the pain of seeing Ireland mug themselves and hand victory to those cheese eating surrender monkeys from France. Good craic in Scoop's work local Molloy's (near Store Street). Definitely going there again after the England match. A poor weekend's rugby for NRFC heads. The 1XV were soundly beaten by Lansdowne on Saturday and Ireland A starring Berch were equally soundly beaten by England A on Friday night. At least Leeds United won, though we're still bottom of the table (sigh).

Good craic in Johnson's last night. The only downside was Scoop legging it about 11 o'clock leaving a man behind (unfinished pint). To all NRFC singles out there, Olivia reckons she's a dab hand at match making, though she was unable to provide any evidence (apart from her own marriage to Paul) to back it up, so read the fine print carefully before hiring her. Webmaster also enjoyed the pleasant company of Mackie's sister spelt 'Eimear' (not Emer she was at pains to add) who has promised to send her 7ft 9 inch boyfriend out to Rosetown to play on the wing.

Lookalikes - new material needed: Webmaster taking submissions for the next round of Lookalikes this month. So far none of the ladies have made the Lookalikes hall of fame so it would be nice if we could find some long lost ladies' twins out there...

Feb 8th: Irish Army clashes with French Army. Lucky for the Gauls it's only in rugby. Irish Army v French Army rugby international at the Green Road tomorrow (Friday). k.o is 2pm. Irish Army will have a number of NRFC players including club captain Rory McCann. The French may use their weapon of mass destruction Noel Heavey (see lookalikes for a clue).

Berch on the bench for the A match.
Club coach Bernard Jackman is on the bench for the A International tomorrow (Friday) night v England Saxons (England A by another name). Match is televised on Network 2. k.o is 7.45.

1XV play Lansdowne
in a friendly Sat noon k.o (could this ACTUALLY be the last game at Lansdowne Road??). 3XV away to Cill Dara in the Spiers Cup next Tuesday night. Kick off under lights is 8pm.

New E&R:
Noel's been busy recounting the time he played representative rugby for County Kildare. His glorious debut didn't go quite to plan go to Eggs and Rashers for more....

U-18 player profiles
- are with Webmaster and are ridiculously late for publishing to the website. Sorry lads, no excuse but they'll be up by next Tuesday. If Ireland don't win on Sunday they'll be up on Monday.....

Feb 5th International Ticket Update: International tickets for the France match next Sunday will be available at the club from 9-10pm Tuesday & Thursday. Please spread the word about ticket availability and please stop ringing JD about the same. He has his hands full after yesterday's arrival of Tadgh Michael Dardis - a healthy 10lb 9oz strapping boy. All doing great. Congrats to JD and Caoimhe from all in NRFC. Now leave him alone for a few days!

International Ticket Update from JD:

At this stage what was left of my brain is fried from the doing the ticket spreadsheet. But here's the bottom line:

Active members who applied for stand have been given 1 stand ticket each. HOWEVER, the two senior captains Rory McCann and Lisa Morrissey have been given two as well as Colin Goode and Mick McCoy (the two directors). After that some people have said they'd take 2 France and 0 England which works out too. THE BEST SOLUTION IS TO BUDDY UP WITH AN ACTIVE MEMBER or date/ marry a fellow member (isn't that right Colin O'B and Paul Archbold!). Whilst previously people married for money and land, they're doing it for tickets now!
As people pull out because they don't want 1 stand I will award that stand to the next most deserving in my view based on club work.

I have a similar situation with terrace where people will get one, 2 based on activity. eg webmaster will get 2, Niall Duffy will get 2.

This is really the most lousy job in the club so bear with me and help me out.

I'm more than happy to put the final list on the website when I've stopped all the juggling. Refunds will be given to all who overpaid and who were not successful for tickets. And anyone who can recommend a better way of doing this, please please let me know, I don't think I can sustain this level of time for tickets with everything else going on the the club and the slight matter of my day job and a baby due next week!!

Jan 26th: Ladies Win in Cup:

The Ladies won 62 - 5 last evening beating Naas , The Naas team are still in the development League and deserve a lot of credit for their performance , Newbridge again fielded a strong Side  and were able to give match time to some of their own development player's namely , Louise , Norma and Michelle.

Well played Ladies, now complete the quest to bring Div 1 Rugby to Newbridge .

Jan 24th: New Eggs and Rashers: Noel duly delivered the goods on time but webmaster asleep at the wheel. E&R now posted and available to view. Apologies for the delay. Also NRFC tour to Toulouse (that'd be in France) planned for late May. Contact Noel or Kevin Coughlan for more details. Early webmaster advice to potential NRFC tourists is to compliment Trevor Brennan on his fine bar (here's a link) and tell him his mother is a fine upstanding woman.

Lookalikes updated: More long lost twins found and matched up with their NRFC twin. Go to Lookalikes for more....

Jan 22nd: 1XV and 2XV do league double over Wicklow. 2nd placed Wicklow were dispatched with aplomb by a seriously fired up firsts team producing the best overall team performance I've seen in a couple of seasons on the way to a 29-3 win. The 2XV also duly obliged with a solid 24-12 win over Wicklow seconds. 1XV and 2XV Match Reports. This now puts the 2XV on top of their league by a point from Portarlington. Newbridge have 1 match remaining, Portarlington have 2 matches left to play. Congrats too to our U18s who had a great win over Cill Dara at the weekend. The 3XV lost a close one 8-0 away to Old Belevedere in their league match on Saturday.

Ladies match next Thursday.
Speaking of fired up teams of late, Newbridge Ladies play Naas under lights in the Leinster Cup next Thursday (Jan 25th) at Naas RFC. k.o 8pm. All support welcome and appreciated.

Captain's Night Friday Jan 26th.
Captain's night goes ahead next Friday night at the Rosetown clubhouse. Doors open at 8:15 pm. Admission €10. Emphasis is on the craic & the theme for the night is the 60's. Contact Noel Heavey for 60's gear. He has a wardrobe full of it.

International Ticket update.
The deadline for ticket applications and money to be submitted has passed. No more apllications will be accepted at this point. A club committee will convene shortly to review the application list and make a decision on 6 nations ticket allocation to the NRFC members.

PTC Friday Night Lights Feb 23:
The Town's Cup organizers, Cill Dara RFC and Newbridge RFC have agreed to play Provincial Towns Cup R1 match under lights on Friday 23rd Feb, k.o 8pm at Cill Dara's grounds in Beechpark. This is the day before the Ireland-England 6 nations match, so webmaster is reminding all NRFC supporters (and players) to not go on a complete bender celebrating beating Cill Dara as you still have a long day ahead of you on the Saturday.

Jan 15th: Firsts and seconds roll on. Thirds and Ladies lose.  Another good day at the league office for the 1XV and 2XV teams. Important and hard fought wins for the lads away in Edenderry see the 1XV consolidate their mid-table position and the 2XV stay in the hunt for league honours, although we need someone to do us a favour and beat Portarlington pretty soon. 1XV match report. Wasn't at the match myself and if Scoop's match report doesn't float your boat, there's always this week's installment of Eggs&Rashers to get your teeth into. Dara O'Maitiu's thirds lost a close one to St Mary's in the league and the Ladies put up a great show before going down 15-05 to 1st division side Boyne in the cup yesterday.

Regarding the Ladies side, special mention must go to Ladies Captain Lisa Morrissey. Lisa has managed to put two very strong sides on the park the last two weekends which has resulted in victory over Waterpark and a very, very credible performance against 1st Div Boyne. The Ladies are now focused on their remaining League games and promotion from Div 2 . This will be achieved with improved attendance at training and the now traditional team spirit. Having seen the Ladies take apart Waterpark last weekend, webmaster can vouch for the skill, determination and spirit of the side. Every season the quality of the Ladies rugby being played has come on in leaps and bounds and this season is no exception. They deserve a lot more support from the sideline than they've been getting up to this point so next opportunity get out there on the road or at Rosetown and give the girls a shout... or you could end up in the Lookalikes section currently being updated for new entries next week.

Leinster qualify for ERC QF.
Thanks in no small part to the efforts of Club Coach Bernard Jackman and U20s coach Jamie Heaslip. Great stuff outta ye lads. Just the small matter of shutting up 'The Shed' in Gloucester next weekend and a home QF is assured. Berch even got Franner to write a few words of grudging praise about him in last Sunday's Tribune. With a bit of luck you'll get another shot at dem Munster headbangers on the way to lifting the trophy in Twikenham in May. JD, we need to be more selective which club members get tickets for the Leinster-Munster semi (or final??) this year. There's definitely me and Noel H in the blue camp. Also the fact that Limerick and Cork GAA delegates voted against the motion to open up Croke Park to rugby and soccer means Niall Browne, Mick McCoy & Mike Young forfeit their home international tickets for this year. Which I'll gladly take off your hands.

Jan 11th: International Ticket Update:

At the risk of moving the goalposts again!!

The executive decided Jan 9th that whilst you must prepay to be in with any chance of getting tickets, due to oversubsciption and the large number of new members requesting tickets, the officers of the club (me, Niall B, Ger Barry, and Niall Kidd) will decide on the lucky recipients based on participation in the club and track record with tickets.

Money must be with me by Friday week (Jan 19th) at the latest. If you haven't prepaid you won't be considered regardless of who you are!!

The max you can request is 2 tickets.

Unsuccessful people will have their money returned.

Jan 8th: Newbridge 2007 Legends of Rugby Award

To all Rugby Fans,
The 5th annual Newbridge Rugby Club "Legend in Rugby Award" 2007 takes place this year on the 16th February.
This year we celebrate the magnificent Ireland team of 1982.
Who could forget the heroic exploits of Ciaran,Ollie,Ginger,Philo,Mossy,Willie,Slatts,Hugo etc. as they won the Triple Crown for the first time in 33 years.
Remember the 20-12 win over Wales?,Trevor Ringland (1) and Moss Finn (2) scored Ireland's tries with the magnificent Ollie Campbell adding a conversion and 2 penalties.

Next came the English in fortress Twickenham with Ireland winning 15-16.Hugo MacNeill's try started the ball rolling,Ollie getting 2 more penalties before Gerry "Ginger" McLoughlin carried the English pack along with Ciaran Fitzgerald and Donal Lenihan on his back over the line to score his first try for Ireland.
Then came the Scot's to Lansdowne Road to try and stop Ireland's 5th Triple Crown. But they huffed and they puffed but they couldn't blow the place down as King Ollie kicked 6 penalties and a drop goal ( a new Irish record) to win 21-12.
This was a truly remarkable feat and Ireland's first time to win a Triple crown at Lansdowne Road.

Now 25 years later we celebrate again this amazing achievement.
Again generously sponsored by Willie Doyle of Newbridge Silverware we welcome Ciaran Fitzgerald and his men to Newbridge Rugby Club.
This Black Tie event will be held in Killashee House Hotel,Kilcullen Road,Naas,Co.Kildare.

Tickets are €150 each, tables of 10-12.Individual ticket requests catered for.

Jan 8th: Good weekend in the league. A good weekend for the NRFC teams. Maybe we should start praying for poor weather from now on as Newbridge enjoyed league success in 3 out of 4 games. The 1XV and 2XV enjoyed good wins over North Kildare in the Rosetown mud. 1XV and 2XV Match Reports.

The Ladies were waiting in the long grass for Waterpark and duly delivered with the right combination of aggression and power and no little skill. Ladies Match Report. 18 players Turned up for the Game , Despite the loss of International Panelists Catriona, Julie and despite the enforced absence of Bernie ( Leinster Interpro ) , Sarah Molloy ( Injured ) Muireann ( Stranded in the US ) the Team Spirit and powerful forward play made sure that Waterpark were beaten , reversing a earlier League defeat 35-3. Special mention to Lisa ( Capt) leading role Carrying the ball forward to the opposition and Jane ( Pack Leader).

Julie and Nicci came directly from International Camp to support the Teams efforts to get promotion which was barely missed last Year .

There are signs of resurgence amongst the Ladies and Promotion to Div one is a real aspiration , the support of , Aidan , Cass , Pierce and Ollie was noted and appreciated by the Team.

The 3XV lost to league leaders Bective in the league on Saturday. A full set of fixtures again this weekend. Dara's Thirds at home to St Mary's on Saturday. The Ladies cup campaign starts on the road away to Boyne. The 1XV and 2XV are away to Edenderry. A win for the 1XV will see Edenderry all but relegated to division 3 for next season. Something that will cause few tears to be shed in Rosetown.... Webmaster will be particularly dry eyed when it happens...

International Ticket Update: Congratulations to Pat Dowling Snr. The first member to pay up front for the six nations tickets. Pat has secured two stand tickets for the two home games. Closely followed by Sean McCann and Gerry McMahon.
Remember, pay now
360 for 2 stand for 2 games

Dont be dissappointed pay up now. Offer only valid to paid
