Newbridge women get the season off to a good start
Newbridge Ladies had their first run out at weekend in Ashbourne Rugby Club at the season opening Blitz hosted by Leinster Ladies Rugby. First kick off was against Enniscorthy where Kaylee ‘Speedy’ Cogan lived up to her name and scored an early try which she converted giving Newbridge a 7-0 victory.
Next up was Mullingar where the Newbridge ladies pulled together playing a great attacking game, powerful running by Laura Coates and a super off-load to Geri Murphy resulted in a try and a 5-0 win for the Newbridge Ladies.
The third game was against a strong Kilkenny side that snuck a try past the defence giving them a 5-0 win. Next game was against old rivals Old Belvo, Newbridge dominated the play and came away with a 7-0 win, Kaylee Cogan again scoring a super try.
It was all to play for in the final match when Newbridge took on Carrick, they played with determination, making Carrick play a defensive game but unfortunately the final whistle blew before they could break the try line and the game ended 0-0.
A great day was had by all, the newbie’s took to it like ducks to water guided by the more experienced players who all pulled together, team spirit and determination are certainly not lacking in this team. There was no shortage of encouragement from the side line as new coach Aidan Kelly went home with a very hoarse voice! Also well done to three Newbridge players Elma Bernie, Maria Byrne and Kaylee Cogan who went on to play for Connacht A who drew 5-5 against Leinster Club selection. Well done girls you did us proud!! Well done to all, this was a fantastic start to the new season, Newbridge ladies showed great skill, determination and team spirit, raising confidence which will be brought to their first league game away to Mullingar on 25/09/11.
